Power Window System

Diagnosis & Testing

Any diagnosis of the Window Regulator Modules should begin with the use of the scan tool.

CAUTION
Disable the airbag system before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, seat belt tensioner, side airbag, or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait 2 minutes for the airbag system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the airbag system. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment and possible personal injury.

The following wiring test determines whether or not voltage is continuous through the body harness to the front switch.

  1. Remove the power window switch and bezel.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the wire connector from the back of the power window switch.
  4.
  5. Switch the ignition to the ON position.
  6.
  7. Connect the clip end of a 12 volt test light to Pin 4 of the window switch harness connector.
  8.
  9. Touch the test light probe to Pin 3.
    1. If the test light illuminates, the wiring circuit between the battery and switch is OK.
    2.
    3. If the lamp does not illuminate, first check the 30 amp circuit breaker in the fuse block. If the circuit breaker is OK, then check for a broken wire.

  10.

If the power window motor is receiving proper current and ground and does not operate, proceed with the motor test.

  1. Remove the front door trim panel as necessary to gain access to the power window motor wire connector.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the power window motor wire connector from the door harness.
  4.
  5. Using 2 jumper wires, connect one to a battery positive source and the other to a good ground.
  6.
  7. Connect the Negative jumper probe to one of the motor connector terminals.
  8.
  9. Momentarily touch the Positive jumper probe to the other motor connector terminal.
  10.
  11. When the positive probe is connected, the motor should rotate in one direction to either move window up or down. If window is all the way up or down the motor will hum and the inner door panel will flex when actuated in that direction.
  12.
  13. Reverse jumper probes at the motor connector terminals and the window should now move in the opposite direction. If window does not move or hum, replace the motor.
  14.
  15. If the window moved completely up or down, reverse the jumper probes and cycle the window to the opposite position to verify full operation.
  16.
  17. If motor hums and does not move, verify that regulator is not binding.

Window Motor & Regulator

The window regulator modules are directly connected to each of the front door window regulator motors. The front window switches communicate with the Cab Compartment Node (CCN) via the Local Interconnect Network (LIN) bus. The CCN then communicates with the regulator module via the Controlled Area Network (CAN). The rear window switches are hard wired by a MUX circuit to the respective window regulator module. The respective rear window motor is hard wired to the module. The front window motor is directly attached to the module. Both front door window switches have the express down feature. The module will cease lowering the front glass when a fully down position is sensed through the hall effect sensor. When a module must be replaced, it is necessary to replace the entire motor/regulator assembly.
