CAUTION
Refer to the applicable service precautions for this system before performing the following operation. Failure to follow the warnings and cautions could result in possible personal injury or death.

NOTE
The A/C compressor may be removed and repositioned without disconnecting the refrigerant lines or discharging the refrigerant system. Discharging is not necessary if servicing the compressor clutch, clutch field coil or engine.

NOTE
If an internal failure of the A/C compressor has occurred, the receiver/drier must be replaced.

  1. Recover the refrigerant from the refrigerant system, as outlined in this section.
  2.
  3. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Remove the radiator fan, as outlined in Engine Mechanical.
  6.
  7. Remove the nuts that secures the suction and discharge lines to the A/C compressor.
  8.
  9. Disconnect the suction and discharge lines from the A/C compressor and remove and discard the O-ring seals and gaskets.
  10.
  11. Install plugs in, or tape over the opened refrigerant line fittings and compressor ports.
  12.
  13. Remove the accessory drive belt, as outlined in Engine Mechanical.
  14.
  15. Disconnect the engine wire harness from the field coil connector located on the top of the A/C compressor.
  16.
  17. Remove the engine wire harness from the wiring bracket located near the front of the A/C compressor.
  18.
  19. Support the A/C compressor and remove the four bolts that secure the compressor to the mounting bracket.
  20.
  21. Raise and support the vehicle.
  22.
  23. Remove the underside compressor splash shield push-pins and the splash shield.
  24.
  25. Remove the A/C compressor from the engine compartment.
  26.
  27. If required, remove the four bolts that secure the compressor mounting bracket to the engine and remove the bracket.

To install:

NOTE
If a replacement A/C compressor is being installed, be certain to check the refrigerant oil level. Use only refrigerant oil of the type recommended for the A/C compressor in the vehicle.

  1. If removed, position the compressor mounting bracket onto the engine and install the retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  2.
  3. Position the A/C compressor onto the compressor mounting bracket and support the compressor.
  4.
  5. Install the underside compressor splash shield and the push-pin retainers.
  6.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.
  9. Loosely install the four bolts that secure the A/C compressor to the compressor mounting bracket. Tighten the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm) in the following sequence:
    1. The upper bolt at the front of the compressor.
    2.
    3. The lower bolt at the front of the compressor.
    4.
    5. The upper bolt at the rear of the compressor.
    6.
    7. The lower bolt at the rear of the compressor.
    8.

  10.
  11. Connect the engine wire harness to the field coil connector.
  12.
  13. Install the engine wire harness lead to the wiring bracket located near the front of the A/C compressor.
  14.
  15. Install the accessory drive belt.
  16.
  17. Remove the plugs or tape from the refrigerant line fittings and the compressor ports.
  18.
  19. Lubricate new rubber O-ring seals with clean refrigerant oil and install them and a new gasket onto the suction and discharge line.
  20.
  21. Connect the suction and discharge lines to the A/C compressor.
  22.
  23. Install the nuts that secure the suction and discharge lines to the A/C compressor. Tighten the nuts to 17 f t. lbs. (23 Nm).
  24.
  25. Install the radiator fan.
  26.
  27. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  28.
  29. Evacuate and charge the refrigerant system, as outlined in this section.
