Wheel Bearings

Adjustment



These front wheel drive vehicles are equipped with permanently sealed front wheel bearings. There is no periodic lubrication or maintenance recommended for these units.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheels
     
    Hub and bearing-to-stub axle cotter pin and retainer nut
     
    Front caliper assembly from steering knuckle
     
    Front brake rotor from the hub
     
    Wheel Speed Sensor (WSS) harness connector and unclip the connector and retaining clip from the frame rail
     
    Screw attaching the WSS routing bracket to the strut, open the routing clip at the knuckle and remove the cable
     

  4.  
  5. Push in the outer end of the halfshaft to disengage the splines from the hub splines.

  6.  

To install:

  1. Clean all mating and mounting surfaces prior to installation to prevent damage.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Hub/bearing onto the halfshaft stub shaft and into the knuckle until it is squarely seated on the face of the knuckle.
     
    Four hub/bearing bolts and using a crisscross pattern tighten progressively and equally to 45 ft. lbs. (65 Nm)
     
    WSS sensor clip, cable, routing clip and attach the connection
     
    Rotor and caliper
     

  4.  
  5. Have an assistant apply the brakes, install the washer, and hub nut. Tighten the nut to 180 ft. lbs. (244 Nm).

  6.  
  7. Check and adjust the brake fluid and brakes.
  8.  
  9. Align the vehicle.
  10.
