Removal & Installation

NOTE
The Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) and the Antilock Brake Module (ABM) used with this antilock brake system are combined (integrated) into one unit, which is called the Integrated Control Unit (ICU). The ICU is located below the master cylinder in the engine compartment. It is mounted to the left frame rail.

NOTE
The replaceable components of the ICU are the HCU and the ABM. No attempt should be made to service any individual components of the HCU or ABM.

  1. If the mounting bracket needs to be removed from the ICU, remove the single mounting bolt, then slide the ICU's mounting pins out of the grommets in the bracket. Remove the mounting pins from the ICU as necessary.

To install:

  1. Clean any debris off the mating surfaces of the HCU and ABM.
    WARNING
When installing new O-rings or solenoid valve stem seals, do not use any type of lubricant.

  2.
  3. If the seals on the components are not new, they must be replaced. Each of the solenoid valve stem seals must be replaced; do not reuse solenoid valve stem seals. The pump/motor connector O-ring should also be replaced if not new.

  5. Align components and install the ABM on the HCU.
  6.
  7. If not equipped with traction control, install the three screws attaching the ABM to the HCU, and tighten the mounting screws to 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  8.
  9. If equipped with traction control, install the four screws attaching the ABM to the HCU, and tighten the mounting screws to 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  10.
  11. If the mounting bracket needs to be installed, install the mounting pins in the ICU as necessary and tighten to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm). Insert the mounting pins into the grommets mounted in the bracket, then install the mounting bolt, and tighten the mounting bolt to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm).

  2.
  3. Remove the four screws attaching the Antilock Brake Module (ABM) to the Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU).
    WARNING
When removing the ABM from the HCU, be sure to completely separate the two components (approximately 1.5 inches (38 mm)) before removing the ABM. Otherwise, damage to the pressure sensor will result requiring HCU replacement.

To install:

WARNING
Inspect seal around mating edge of ABM to ensure seal is in good shape.

  1. Clean any debris off the mating surfaces of the ABM or the HCU.
    WARNING
When installing the ABM to the HCU, care must be taken not to damage the pressure sensor. If damaged, HCU replacement is necessary.

  2.
  3. Align the ABM solenoids and the pump/motor wiring with the HCU valves and wiring passage . Slide the ABM onto the HCU.
  4.
  5. Install the four screws attaching the ABM to the HCU. Tighten the mounting screws to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  6.
  7. If the mounting bracket needs to be installed on the ICU, slide the mounting bracket grommet over the mounting pin and two grommet cutouts over the grommets on the ICU mounted studs. Tighten the mounting nuts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
