3.5L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Radiator close out panel
     
    Radiator core support
     
    Radiator fans
     
    Top and bottom A/C compressor bolts. It is not necessary to evacuate the system. Reposition the compressor.
     
    A/C compressor bracket
     
    Structural collar from the rear of the oil pan and transmission housing
     
    Inspection shield from between transmission and oil pan
     
    Dipstick and housing
     
    Oil pan mounting bolts, oil pan and gasket

  7. Clean the oil pan and all gasket surfaces.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Apply a 1 / 8 in. (3mm) bead of sealer at the parting line of the oil pump body and the rear seal retainer.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan and torque the M8 nuts/bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm) and the M6 nuts/bolts to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    Dipstick and housing
     
    Inspection shield from between transmission and oil pan
     
    Structural collar to the rear of the oil pan and transmission housing
     
    A/C compressor bracket and tighten the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
     
    Top and bottom A/C compressor bolts to 250 inch lbs. (28 Nm)
     
    Radiator fans
     
    Radiator core support
     
    Radiator close out panel
     
    Negative battery cable

3.8L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove and relocate the speed control servo.
  6.  
  7. Unlock the electrical connector and disconnect the vacuum hose from servo.
  8.  
  9. Unlock and disconnect the electrical connectors from the cooling module.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the wiring clips from cooling module.
  12.  
  13. Remove the retaining clip from the top of the cooling module.
  14.  
  15. Remove the two fasteners and remove fan module from the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the bolt from the oil cooler line bracket in the front motor mount.
  18.  
  19. Remove the battery positive cable from the starter.
  20.  
  21. Remove the lower, middle and upper starter bolt.
  22.  
  23. Place a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator core, to keep from damaging the radiator.
  24.  
  25. Remove the starter, and disconnect the solenoid wire from the starter.
  26.  
  27. Remove the starter.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Place a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator core, to keep from damaging the radiator.
  2.  
  3. Place the starter on the lower crossmember and connect the starter solenoid connector.
  4.  
  5. Install the dust shield on the nose of the starter, make sure of proper orientation.
  6.  
  7. Loosely install the starter mounting bolts.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the mounting bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of removal.
  12.  
  13. Drain the engine oil.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  16.  
  17. Remove the dipstick tube.
  18.  
  19. Remove the right engine mount heat shield.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the in block heater, if equipped.
  22.  
  23. Remove the right engine mount structural bracket at the engine and transaxle.
  24.  
  25. Remove the flex plate inspection cover.
  26.  
  27. Remove oil pan bolts, oil pan and gasket.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Clean the sealing surfaces and apply a 1 / 8 inch bead of sealer at the parting line of the chain case cover and the rear seal retainer.
  2.  
  3. Position a new pan gasket on the oil pan. (3) Install oil pan and tighten the fasteners to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the flex plate cover.
  6.  
  7. Install the right engine mount bracket.
  8.  
  9. Connect the in block heater, if equipped.
  10.  
  11. Install the right engine mount heat.
  12.  
  13. Install the dipstick tube.
  14.  
  15. Fill the crankcase to the correct level.
  16.  
  17. Start the engine, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  18.  

4.0L Engine

NOTE
On some vehicles it may be necessary to remove the compressor mounting bolts and position the unit aside. If the unit cannot be positioned to the side it will have to be removed from the vehicle.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the radiator close out panel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the radiator core support.
  8.  
  9. Remove the radiator fan.
  10.  
  11. Remove the engine oil level indicator.
  12.  
  13. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  14.  
  15. Drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter.
  16.  
  17. If equipped, remove the oil cooler mounting stud and position the cooler aside.
  18.  
  19. Remove the oil pan retaining bolts and remove the oil pan from its mounting.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Apply a 1 / 8 in. (3mm) bead of sealer at the parting line of the oil pump body and the rear seal retainer.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pan gasket to the oil pan.
  4.  
  5. Install the pan while aligning the oil level indicator tube. Attach the fasteners, finger tight.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the M8 pan alignment (rear) bolt to 250 inch lbs. Tighten the pan alignment (front) bolt to 250 inch lbs.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the M8 bolts and nuts to 250 inch lbs.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the M6 bolts to 105 inch lbs.
  12.  
  13. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  14.  
  15. Be sure to fill the engine with the correct type engine oil.
  16.  
  17. Start the engine and check for leaks, correct as required.
