    Main Bearing Torque Sequence



    3.5L & 4.0L Engines

    The main bearing cap bolts must be tightened in the proper sequence. First the inner main cap bolts, secondly the windage tray bolts, lastly the main cap tie (horizontal) bolts.

    3.8L Engine
    1. Install each main cap and tighten bolts finger tight.
    2.  
    3. Tighten number 1, 3 and 4 main cap bolts to 30 ft. lbs.+ 1 / 4 turn (41 Nm + 1 / 4 turn).

    5. Rotate the crankshaft until the number 6 piston is at TDC.
    6.  
    7. To ensure correct thrust bearing alignment the following procedure must be done:
      1. Move crankshaft all the way to the rear of its travel.
      2.  
      3. Then, move crankshaft all the way to the front of its travel.
      4.  
      5. Wedge an appropriate tool between the rear of the cylinder block and rear crankshaft counterweight. This will hold the crankshaft in its most forward position.
      6.  
      7. Tighten the No. 2 thrust bearing cap bolts to 30 ft. lbs.+ 1 / 4 turn (41 Nm + 1 / 4 turn). Remove the holding tool.
