Removal & Installation

3.5L & 4.0L Engines

The water pump on all models can be replaced without discharging the air conditioning system.

It is normal for the water pump to weep a small amount of coolant from the weep hole (black stain on water pump body). Do not replace the water pump if this condition exists. Replace the water pump if a heavy deposit or a steady flow of engine coolant is evident on water pump body from the weep hole (shaft seal failure). Be sure to perform a thorough analysis before replacing water pump.

CAUTION
DO NOT REMOVE PRESSURE CAP WITH THE SYSTEM HOT AND UNDER PRESSURE BECAUSE SERIOUS BURNS FROM COOLANT CAN OCCUR.

  1. Drain the cooling system.
    NOTE
The water pump is driven by the timing belt.

  2.
  3. Remove water pump mounting bolts. Note position of longer bolt for proper installation.
  4.
  5. Remove water pump body from engine.
  6.

To install:

  1. Clean all O-ring surfaces on pump and cover.
  2.
  3. Apply silicone grease to the O-ring to facilitate assembly. Install new O-ring on water pump.
  4.
  5. Position water pump to engine.
  6.
  7. Install mounting bolts and tighten to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  8.
  9. Install timing belt.
  10.
  11. Fill the cooling system.
  12.

3.8L Engine

  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2.
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt shield.
  4.
  5. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  6.
  7. Remove the water pump pulley bolts.
    NOTE
To remove the water pump pulley, it MUST first be positioned between water pump housing and drive hub. The pulley can then be removed with the water pump assembly.

  8.
  9. Rotate the pulley until openings in pulley align with water pump drive hub spokes. Move pulley inward between pump housing and hub.
  10.
  11. Position the pulley to allow access to water pump mounting bolts. Remove water pump mounting bolts.
  12.
  13. Remove the water pump with the pulley loosely positioned between hub and the pump body.
  14.
  15. Remove and discard the seal.
  16.
  17. Clean the seal groove and sealing surfaces on pump and timing chain case cover. Take care not to scratch or gouge sealing surfaces.
  18.

To install:

NOTE
The water pump pulley MUST be positioned loosely between the pump housing and drive hub BEFORE water pump installation.

  1. Position the water pump pulley loosely between pump housing and drive hub.
  2.
  3. Install the water pump and pulley to the timing chain case cover. Tighten water pump bolts to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  4.
  5. Position the pulley on water pump hub. Install bolts and tighten to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  6.
  7. Rotate the pump by hand to check for freedom of movement.
  8.
  9. Install the accessory drive belt.
  10.
  11. Install the drive belt shield.
  12.
  13. Fill the cooling system.
  14.
