The neutral safety switch, sometimes called the park/neutral position switch, also contains the back-up light switch.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the shift linkage.
  4.  
  5. Detach the electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the mounting bolts, then remove the switch.
  8.

To install:

  1. If you are reinstalling the old switch, perform the following:
    1. Place the shift shaft in NEUTRAL.
    2.  
    3. Align the flats of the shift shaft with the switch.
    4.  
    5. Loosely assemble the mounting bolts to the case.
    6.  
    7. Insert a gauge pin or 3 / 32 in. drill bit in the service slots.
    8.  
    9. Tighten the bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Remove the gauge pin.
    12.

  3. If installing a new switch, perform the following:
    1. Place the shift shaft in NEUTRAL.
    2.  
    3. Align the flats of the shift shaft to the flats in the switch.
    4.

If the switch has been rotated and the pin broken, the switch can be adjusted using the old switch installation procedure.

    1. Install the mounting bolts and tighten to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm). If the bolt holes do not align with the mounting boss on the transaxle, make sure the shift shaft is in the NEUTRAL position, do not rotate the switch. The switch is pinned in the NEUTRAL position.

  1. Adjust the switch as follows:
    1. Place the transaxle control shifter assembly in the NEUTRAL notch in the detent plate.
    2.  
    3. Loosen the switch attaching bolts.
    4.  
    5. Rotate the switch on the shifter assembly to align the service adjustment slots.
    6.  
    7. Insert a gauge pin or 3 / 32 in. drill bit in the service slots.
    8.  
    9. Tighten the attaching screws to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm). Remove the gauge pin.
    10.

  3. Attach the electrical connector and shift linkage.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.

Buick Park Avenue 1996-1999

Oldsmobile 88 1992-1995

Pontiac Bonneville 1991-1995

  1. Set the parking brake and place the gear shift selector to N .
  2.  
  3. Remove the manual shaft nut.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the cable/bracket from the transmission shaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove the switch retaining bolts.
  8.  
  9. Detach the electrical connector.
  10.  
  11. Remove the nut from the starter.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the cable.
  14.  
  15. Remove the park/neutral position switch.

To install:

  1. Connect the cable.
  2.  
  3. Install the nut and tighten to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Attach the electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Make sure the transaxle shaft is still in NEUTRAL. If it has been moved, rotate the shaft clockwise from PARK through REVERSE, into NEUTRAL, being careful not to damage the shaft flats, corners or threads.
  8.  
  9. Install the park/neutral position switch, as follows:
    1. Align the flats in the park/neutral position switch with the transaxle manual shaft flats.
    2.  
    3. Press the park/neutral position switch onto the shaft and fully seat against the transaxle.
    4.  

  10.  
  11. When installing the original switch, insert a gauge pin or 3 / 32 in. drill bit into the service slots. New replacement park/neutral position switches are already pinned into the NEUTRAL position.
  12.  
  13. Install the retaining switch retaining bolts, and tighten to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Remove the gauge pin or drill bit, if installed previously.
  16.  
  17. Place the linkage cable/bracket onto the manual shaft.
  18.  
  19. Install the nuts.
  20.  

After adjusting the park/neutral position switch, make sure the engine starts only in PARK or NEUTRAL. If the engine starts in any other position, readjust the switch.

  1. Adjust the switch as follows:
    1. Place the transaxle control shifter assembly in the NEUTRAL notch in the detent plate.
    2.  
    3. Loosen the switch attaching bolts.
    4.  
    5. Rotate the switch on the shifter assembly to align the service adjustment slots.
    6.  
    7. Insert a gauge pin or 3 / 32 in. drill bit in the service slots.
    8.  
    9. Tighten the attaching screws to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm). Remove the gauge pin.
    10.

  3. Check for proper operation, readjust as needed.

  1. Set the parking brake and place the gear shift selector to N .

  3. Detach the electrical connector(s).
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the linkage retaining nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cable and lever.
  8.  
  9. Remove the park/neutral position switch.
  10.

To install:

  1. Make sure the transaxle shaft is still in NEUTRAL. If it has been moved, rotate the shaft clockwise from PARK, through REVERSE, into NEUTRAL, being careful not to damage the shaft flats, corners or threads.

  3. Adjust the switch as follows (if reinstalling the old switch):
  4.  

New replacement park/neutral position switches are already pinned in the NEUTRAL position.

    1. When installing a switch with a sheared pin, insert the alignment tool into the two slots on the switch in the area of the transaxle shaft. Rotate the tool until the rear leg on the tool falls into the slot on the switch near the hose. Make sure the tool is properly seated in all three slots. Remove the tool.

  1. Check for a cracked carrier if the pin is sheared or if installing the original switch.
  2.  
  3. Install the park/neutral position switch:
    1. Align the flats in the park/neutral position switch with the transaxle manual shaft flats.
    2.  
    3. Press the park/neutral position switch onto the shaft and fully seat against the transaxle.
    4.

  5. Install the bolts loosely. Check the alignment of the switch with the alignment tool, then tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Remove the alignment tool.
  8.  
  9. Install the cable and lever.
  10.  
  11. Install the linkage retaining nut and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Attach the electrical connectors.
  14.  
  15. Set the parking brake. After switch installation, make sure that the engine starts only in PARK or NEUTRAL. If the engine starts in any other position, the switch must be readjusted.
  16.  
  17. Check the shifter for normal freedom of movement and proper shift control cable adjustment.
