The H-body models are equipped with sealed hub and bearing assemblies for the front and rear wheels. The hub and bearing assemblies are non-serviceable. If the assembly is damaged, the complete unit must be replaced. Refer to Section 8 for the hub and bearing removal and installation procedure.

Adjustment



Specific to:

Buick Park Avenue 1998-1999

Oldsmobile Regency 1998

The wheel bearings are not adjustable. If a wheel bearing is out of specifications, it must be replaced. Using a dial indicator, check for looseness. If play exceeds 0.005 inch (0.127mm), the bearing wear is excessive and the hub/bearing should be replaced.

Removal & Installation

Oldsmobile Regency 1998

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Insert a drift punch through the caliper and into the rotor cooling fins to prevent the rotor from turning.



    Front wheel
     



    Halfshaft nut and washer
     
    Brake caliper
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor
     
    3 hub/bearing assembly bolts
     
    Dust shield
     
    Hub/bearing assembly from the halfshaft, using a puller
     
    Hub/bearing assembly from the steering knuckle

To install:

  1. Install the hub/bearing assembly over the halfshaft splines. Be sure the splines engage smoothly.
  2.  
  3. Apply a light coating of grease to the steering knuckle bore.
  4.  
  5. Slide the hub assembly onto the halfshaft as far as possible. If the hub will not bottom out on the halfshaft, install the hub mounting bolts and use the halfshaft nut to draw the hub onto the halfshaft.
  6.  
  7. Once the hub is flush with the steering knuckle, remove the mounting bolts and install the dust shield.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

  11. Install the mounting bolts. Torque the bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Place the transaxle in N .
  14.  
  15. Install or connect the following:

    ABS front wheel speed sensor connector, and clip to the dust shield
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Caliper. Torque the bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (51 Nm).
     

  16.  
  17. Torque the halfshaft nut to 107 ft. lbs. (145 Nm) on 1998-99 models or 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm) on 2000-02 models.
  18.  
  19. Install the front wheels. Torque the lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Road test the vehicle.
