CAUTION
Observe all applicable safety precautions when working around gasoline. Do not allow fuel spray or fuel vapors to come in contact with a spark or open flame. Keep a dry chemical (Class B) fire extinguisher near the work area. Never drain or store fuel in an open container due to the possibility of fire or explosion.

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain all fuel from the tank into a proper container.
  6.  
  7. Detach the sender assembly wires, tank filler and the vent hoses.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the fuel pipe quick-connectors.
  10.  
  11. Have an assistant support the fuel tank, then disconnect the 2 tank retaining straps.
  12.  
  13. Lower the exhaust by disconnecting at the rear hanger, then carefully remove the fuel tank from the vehicle. Remove the tank from the vehicle slowly, to ensure all connections and hoses have been disconnected.
  14.  
  15. If installing a new tank, transfer the sending unit/pump to the new tank.
  16.

To install:

  1. Install the fuel tank to the vehicle and install the 2 retaining straps.
  2.  
  3. Raise the exhaust and connect the rear hanger.
  4.  
  5. Connect the fuel pipe quick-connectors.
  6.  
  7. Attach the sender wires, the tank filler and vent hoses.
  8.  
  9. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Refill the tank with fuel and connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Inspect for any fuel leakage.
  14.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure, as outlined earlier in this section.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  

Before disconnecting any fuel lines from the fuel tank, thoroughly clean around all hose connections.

  1. Disconnect the fuel tank filler pipe EVAP pipe from the fuel tank EVAP pipe.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the fuel tank filler pipe from the fuel tank.
  4.  
  5. Detach the quick-connect fuel line fittings from the fuel tank.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the two rear rubber exhaust hangers from the rear of the exhaust system and allow the exhaust system to hang down slightly.
  8.  
  9. If equipped, unfasten the exhaust shield mounting bolts, then remove the exhaust shield.
  10.  
  11. Support the fuel tank with a suitable jack or assistant.
  12.  
  13. Remove the two bolts securing the fuel tank straps, then swing the straps out of the way.
  14.  

Do not bend the fuel tank straps, as this may damage the straps.

  1. Lower the fuel tank enough to detach the fuel sender electrical connector and remove the fuel sender retaining clips.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the EVAP pipe from the rear of the fuel tank.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tank from the vehicle slowly, to ensure all connections and hoses have been disconnected.
  6.

To install:

  1. Clean all parts well. Inspect the tank for dents, rust or other damage. On high-mileage vehicles, it may be good practice to remove the fuel pump module and replace the flexible strainer on the fuel pump.
  2.  
  3. Position the fuel tank under the vehicle and raise the tank with the help of an assistant or a suitable jack.
  4.  
  5. Connect the EVAP pipe to the rear of the fuel tank.
  6.  
  7. Install the fuel sender retaining clips.
  8.  
  9. Attach the electrical connector to the fuel sender assembly.
  10.  
  11. Raise the tank into position into the vehicle and swing the mounting straps under the tank.
  12.  
  13. Install the front fuel tank strap mounting bolts and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Remove the jack.
  16.  
  17. Attach the quick-connect fuel line fittings.
  18.  
  19. Connect the fuel tank filler pipe EVAP pipe to the fuel tank and tighten the hose clamp to 22 inch lbs. (2.5 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Connect the fuel tank filler pipe to the fuel tank and tighten the hose clamp to 22 inch lbs. (2.5 Nm).
  22.  
  23. If equipped, install the exhaust heat shield and the mounting bolts.
  24.  
  25. Position the exhaust system and install the rubber hangers.
  26.  
  27. Carefully lower the vehicle, then refill the fuel system
  28.  
  29. Connect the negative battery cable, then install the fuel filler cap, if not done already.
  30.  
  31. Turn the ignition switch ON for 2 seconds, OFF for 10 seconds, then ON and check for fuel leaks.
