CAUTION
Many vehicles are equipped with SIR or air bag systems. Before performing any diagnosis or repair procedures, you must follow all safety and disarming procedures. Failure to safely disable the system may result in air bag deployment, possible injury or unnecessary repairs.

Removal & Installation

There are several different interior trim packages and instrument cluster options. The procedures listed here may be alter as you find necessary to accommodate the specific needs of the option packages you have on your car. Also refer to Section 10 for additional information on the instrument panel or console.

Individual gauges may not be replaceable on these clusters. If one has failed, cluster assembly replacement may be necessary, depending on application and parts availability.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. If equipped with SIR, disable the SIR system, as outlined earlier in this section.
  2.  


CAUTION
Some models covered by this manual may be equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system, which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SIR components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SIR, as described in this section.

  1. Remove the instrument panel trim plate as follows:
    1. If equipped with tilt wheel, move the steering wheel to its lowest position.
    2.  
    3. For vehicles with column shift, move the shift lever to the 1 position.
    4.  
    5. Use a suitable tool to pry lightly around the edge of the trim plate, then remove the plate. Be careful not to crack or damage the plate.

  3. Remove the instrument panel top cover/pad, as follows:
    1. Remove the speaker, side defogger and defroster grilles by carefully prying them out.

    3. Remove the speaker (if equipped), by unfasten the screws and detaching the electrical connector.
    4.  
    5. If equipped with a twilight sentinel, pop up the photocell retainer and turn the photocell counterclockwise in the retainer and pull it down-and-out.

    7. Remove the instrument panel top cover-to-instrument panel screws.

    9. Slide the instrument panel top cover out far enough to disconnect the aspirator hose and the electrical connector, if equipped.
    10.  
    11. Remove the instrument panel top cover from the instrument panel.

  5. If equipped with quartz electronic speedometer clusters, remove the steering column trim cover, so the shift indicator can be removed.
  6.  
  7. If necessary, remove the steering column filler panel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the instrument cluster-to-instrument panel carrier screws. Pull the cluster housing assembly straight out; this will separate the electrical connectors from the cluster.
  10.  

If not already done, it may be helpful to tilt the wheel all the way down and pull the gear select lever to low, when removing the cluster.

  1. Disconnect the non-volatile memory chip, if equipped.
  2.  

To install:

  1. Reconnect the non-volatile memory chip, if equipped.
  2.  
  3. Attach the electrical connectors, then position the instrument cluster and install the retaining screws.
  4.  
  5. If equipped, install the steering column filler panel.
  6.  
  7. Install the instrument panel top cover and the shift indicator, if equipped.
  8.  
  9. Connect the aspirator hose and the electrical connections.
  10.  
  11. Install the photo cell and retainer, if equipped with a twilight sentinel.
  12.  
  13. Install the speaker, defogger and defroster grilles.
  14.  
  15. Position the instrument panel trim plate, then push it firmly in place.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable and enable the SIR system.
  18.  

Specific to:

Buick LeSabre 1986-1999

Buick Park Avenue 1996-1999

  1. Disable the SIR system. If not already done, disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Carefully pry the lower trim plate out with a suitable tool.
  4.  
  5. Pry the air deflectors out carefully.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the instrument panel trim plate fasteners, then remove the trim plate.
  8.  
  9. If equipped with column shift, disconnect the PRNDL cable.
  10.  
  11. Unfasten the dimmer switch fasteners, then remove the dimmer switch.
  12.  
  13. Remove the instrument cluster fasteners, then remove the cluster.
  14.

To install:

  1. Position the instrument cluster and install the fasteners. Tighten to 15 inch lbs. (1.6 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the dimmer switch and fasteners. Tighten to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm).
  4.  
  5. If equipped, attach the PRNDL cable.
  6.  
  7. Install the instrument panel trim plate and secure with the retaining fasteners. Tighten to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Snap the air deflector into place.
  10.  
  11. Install the instrument panel lower trim panel.
  12.  
  13. Enable the SIR system and connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  

Specific to:

Buick Park Avenue 1996-1999

Oldsmobile 88 1992-1993

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disable the SIR system.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering column filler panel retaining screws, then remove the panel.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the PRNDL cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the instrument panel trim plate by removing the air outlet deflectors, the screws, then gently prying outward.

  1. Remove the cluster to instrument panel screws and pull right end of cluster rearward.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the cluster connector by reaching around cluster and depressing the locking tab on the connector.
  4.  
  5. Pull the bottom of the cluster rearward and rotate the assembly so it is facing up.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cluster assembly by sliding toward the center of the vehicle.
  8.

To install:

  1. Attach the cluster connector, being careful not to damage the connector.
  2.  
  3. Install the cluster to the vehicle and rotate into the proper position.
  4.  
  5. Install the cluster-to-instrument panel screws and tighten to 14 inch lbs. (1.6 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the instrument panel cluster trim plate, retaining screws and air deflectors.
  8.  
  9. Connect the PRNDL cable.
  10.  
  11. Position the steering column filler panel, then install the retaining screws.
  12.  
  13. Enable the SIR system and connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  

Specific to:

Buick Park Avenue 1996-1999

Oldsmobile 88 1994-1999

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the instrument panel molding fasteners, then carefully pull the molding rearward. Carefully pry the windshield defroster grille upwards.
  4.  
  5. If equipped, remove the sunload and twilight sentinel sensor, turning the sensors 1 / 4 turn to release.
  6.  
  7. Remove the windshield defroster grille.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the cluster trim plate-to-instrument panel fasteners.
  10.  
  11. Tilt the top of the trim plate rearward, then pull the bottom of the trim plate rearward.
  12.  
  13. Remove the HVAC control head and head/park lamp switch from the connectors.
  14.  
  15. If necessary, detach the HVAC control head vacuum harness connector.
  16.  
  17. Remove the HVAC control head by carefully pushing one side outward.
  18.  
  19. Remove the head/park lamp switch by carefully pushing one side outward.
  20.  
  21. Remove the trim plate.
  22.

  1. Unfasten the upper trim pad fasteners, then remove the upper trim pad.

  1. If equipped, with column shift, disconnect the PRNDL cable.
  2.  
  3. Unfasten the instrument cluster-to-panel fasteners, then pull the cluster rearward.
  4.  
  5. Detach the cluster connector, then remove it from the vehicle.
  6.

To install:

  1. Attach the instrument cluster connector to the cluster.
  2.  
  3. If equipped, connect the PRNDL cable.
  4.  
  5. Position the cluster in the vehicle and secure with the fasteners. Tighten to 14 inch lbs. (1.6 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Position the upper trim pad and install the fasteners. Place the windshield defroster grill at the base of the windshield.
  8.  
  9. If equipped, install the sunload and twilight sentinel sensors, turning 1 / 4 turn to secure.
  10.  
  11. Install the windshield defroster grille by carefully pressing into place.
  12.  
  13. Route the connectors through the holes in the cluster trim plate.
  14.  
  15. Position the trim plate to the instrument panel and secure with the fasteners. Tighten to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Attach the HVAC control head to the connector, then install the control head to the trim plate.
  18.  
  19. Attach the head/park lamp switch to the connector, then install the switch to the trim plate.
  20.  
  21. Install the instrument panel molding by carefully pushing forward to secure the clips.
  22.  
  23. Install the molding fasteners (in the instrument panel compartment).
  24.  
  25. Enable the SIR system and connect the negative battery cable.
  26.  

Specific to:

Buick Park Avenue 1996-1999

Pontiac Bonneville 1987-1999

  1. Disable the SIR system and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the instrument panel trim plate by carefully prying it out. Pull the plate up, then rearward.
  4.

  1. If equipped, detach the sub-woofer gain control switch connector.
  2.  
  3. Unfasten the steering column filler fasteners, then remove the filler.
  4.  
  5. Lower the steering column.
  6.  
  7. Cover the top of the steering column to prevent damage.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cluster upper trim plate-to-instrument panel fasteners.
  10.  
  11. Remove the interior lamp dimmer and twilight sentinel control knob from the head/parking lamp switch.
  12.  

Be careful not the loose the interior lamps dimmer knob retainer!

  1. Detach the cigar lighter connector.
  2.  
  3. Remove the instrument cluster trim plate.
  4.

  1. Unfasten the instrument cluster-to-panel fasteners. Pull the eight end of the cluster rearward and rotate the cluster to face upward.
  2.  
  3. Detach the cluster connector by reaching around the top or bottom right side of the cluster and depressing the locking tab.
  4.  
  5. On vehicles with 2 connectors, reach around the top or bottom of the cluster assembly and depress the locking tab to detach the connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the instrument cluster by sliding it toward the center of the vehicle.
  8.

To install:

  1. Position the instrument cluster to the panel, facing upward. Slide the cluster in from the center of the vehicle, then rotate to the proper position.
  2.  
  3. Attach the instrument cluster connector(s) by reaching around the top or bottom of the cluster assembly. Check for proper attachment and make sure there are not bent or damaged pins.
  4.  


WARNING
Do not force the cluster connectors. Carefully align the connectors before pushing them into place. Look down the back side of the cluster from the center of the vehicle to guide the connector(s). It may be helpful to use a mirror to help align the connector.

  1. Install the instrument cluster fasteners, and tighten to 14 inch lbs. (1.6 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the cigar lighter connector.
  4.  
  5. Install the cluster upper trim plate to the instrument panel by carefully inserting the tab.
  6.  
  7. Install the interior lamp dimmer and twilight sentinel control knob to the head/park lamp switch. Properly align the retainer in the knob before installation to ensure retention.
  8.  
  9. Install the cluster trim plate fasteners and tighten to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Remove the protective cover from the steering column, then raise the column.
  12.  
  13. Install the steering column filler and install the attaching screws. Tighten to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm).
  14.  
  15. If equipped, attach the sub-woofer gain control switch connector.
  16.  
  17. Install the trim plate by pushing it into place.
  18.  
  19. Enable the SIR system, then connect the negative battery cable.
  20.
