The combination switch is attached to the upper portion of the steering column and is part of the turn signal lever.

Removal & Installation

If the vehicle is not equipped with the SIR system (air bags), skip Step 1 and simply disconnect the negative battery cable. Also, disregard all instructions below related to air bags.

  1. If equipped, disable the SIR system, as outlined in Section 6 of this manual.
  2.  
  3. If not already done, disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel and the shroud.
  6.  
  7. Remove the inflation restraint (air bag module) coil assembly-to-steering shaft lock screw (home boss) and retaining ring. Remove the coil assembly from the shaft and allow it to hang freely.

  1. Position a suitable lock plate compression tool on the end of the steering shaft and compress the lock plate by turning the shaft nut clockwise. Pry the wire snapring out of the shaft groove.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tool, then lift the lock plate from the shaft.
  4.  
  5. Remove the canceling cam, upper bearing preload spring, bearing seat and inner race from the shaft.
  6.  
  7. Position the turn signal switch in the right turn position. Remove the turn signal lever screw, then remove the lever.
  8.  
  9. Remove the turn signal switch by performing the following steps:
    1. Remove the switch-to-steering column screws, then pull the switch out and allow it to hang freely.
    2.  
    3. From under the dash, remove the retainer spring and wiring protector.
    4.  
    5. Remove the hazard knob.
    6.  
    7. Detach the electrical connector from the lower steering column, then gently pull the wiring connector through the gear shift lever bowl, the column housing and the lock housing cover. Remove the switch.

To install:

  1. Route the turn signal switch harness through the steering column housing, then connect the switch and install the screw.
  2.  
  3. Install the switch actuator arm and screw.
  4.  
  5. Install the inner race, bearing seat and the bearing preload spring. Replace the turn signal canceling cam.
  6.  
  7. Use lock plate compression tool to install the lock plate, compress the lock plate, then install the shaft lock retaining ring.
  8.  
  9. To install the SIR inflation restraint coil, perform the following steps:
    1. Install the home boss-to-steering column lock screw, allowing the hub to rotate.
    2.  
    3. While holding the coil assembly (in one hand) with the steering wheel connector facing upwards, rotate the coil hub in the appropriate direction until it stops; the coil ribbon is now wound snug.

    5. Rotate the coil hub 2 1 / 2 turns in the opposite direction until the center lock hole is even with the notch in the coil housing.

    7. While holding the hub in position, install the lock screw into the center lock hole.

    9. Install the coil assembly using the horn tower on the inner ring canceling cam and outer ring projections for alignment purposes.

  11. Install the steering wheel and the shroud.
  12.  
  13. If equipped with the SIR system, properly enable the system, as outlined in Section 6 of this section.
  14.  
  15. If not already done, connect the negative battery cable, then check the turn signals for proper operation.

If the vehicle is not equipped with an air bag, skip Step 1 and simply disconnect the negative battery cable. Also, disregard all instructions below related to air bags.

  1. If equipped, disable the SIR system, as outlined in Section 6 of this manual.
  2.  
  3. If not already done, disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the left side sound insulator.
  6.  
  7. Lower the steering column trim plate.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering column-to-dash screws and lower the steering column.
  10.  
  11. Remove the inflation restraint (air bag module) and the combination switch assembly.
  12.  
  13. Position the ignition switch in the OFF-UNLOCKED position. With the cylinder removed, the rod is in LOCK when it is in the next to the uppermost detent; OFF-UNLOCKED is 2 detents from the top.
  14.  
  15. Remove the mounting screws and disconnect the electrical connectors. Remove the ignition switch assembly along with the dimmer switch.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Adjust the dimmer switch.
  2.  
  3. Install the dimmer switch and attach the mounting screws. Put the ignition switch in OFF-UNLOCKED position; make sure the lock cylinder and actuating rod are in OFF-UNLOCKED (third detent from the top) position.
  4.  
  5. Install the activating rod into the switch and assemble the switch on the column. Tighten the mounting screws.
  6.  
  7. Connect the electrical connections at the dimmer switch.
  8.  
  9. Install the combination switch and replace the air bag module.
  10.  
  11. Position the steering column in place and install the column mounting screws.
  12.  
  13. Install the column trim plate and replace the sound insulator.
  14.  
  15. If equipped with the SIR system, properly enable the system, as outlined in Section 6 of this section.
  16.  
  17. If not already done, connect the negative battery cable, then check the turn signals for proper operation.
