Lower Ball Joints

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Height sensor link from the right control arm
     
    Parking brake cable retaining clip from the left control arm
     
    Adjustment link from the knuckle
     

  4.  
  5. Support the control arm with a jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ball joint stud cotter pin and nut.
  8.  
  9. Reinstall the nut on the stud with the flat side of the nut facing up; do not torque the nut.

  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Stud from the knuckle
     
    Slotted hex nut from the ball joint stud
     

  12.  
  13. Press the ball joint out of the control arm
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Tighten the nut up to one more flat in order to align the slot with the hole in the stud.


    NOTE
    Tighten the nut up to one more flat in order to align the slot with the hole in the stud.



    New ball joint, press it into the control arm
     
    Ball joint stud into the knuckle. Torque the nut to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm), plus an additional 4 flats. The minimum torque on the nut should be 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).

    New cotter pin
     



    Adjustment link to the knuckle. Torque the slotted nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).

    Height sensor link to the right control arm
     
    Parking brake cable retainer to the left control arm
     
    Rear wheel
