Removal & Installation



  1. For 1986-94 vehicles, remove the trunk side cover for access to the strut upper mounting nuts. You may have to remove the rear seat to access the front nut. For 1995-99 vehicles, remove the rear seat cushion and seat back to get to the strut upper nuts. Remove any necessary cover(s) from the strut upper retainers.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. If equipped with Electronic Level Control (ELC), unfasten the tube clip, then disconnect the air tube from the strut.
  6.

  1. Support the control arm with a suitable jack.
  2.  
  3. Unfasten the strut-to-knuckle bolts.

  1. Remove the strut tower mounting nuts through the trunk or the body slot behind the rear seat back.
  2.  
  3. Separate the strut from the knuckle.
  4.  
  5. If equipped with Computer Control Ride (CCR), lower the strut, then detach the electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.
  8.

To install:

  1. If equipped with CCR, attach the electrical connector to the strut.
  2.  
  3. Position the strut assembly in the vehicle, then install the upper strut mounting nuts.
  4.  
  5. Install the strut to the stabilizer shaft bracket and knuckle. Insert the bolts in the direction shown in the accompanying figure.
  6.  
  7. If equipped, attach the ELC air tube.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the strut upper mount nuts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm) and the strut-to-knuckle nuts to 140 ft. lbs. (190 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Remove the jack from under the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Carefully lower the vehicle, then tighten the wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Replace the trunk side cover and/or rear seat back and cushion, as applicable.
  16.  
  17. Take your vehicle to a reputable repair shop to have the rear alignment checked and adjusted, as necessary.
