Removal & Installation



Wiper Motor

Specific to:

Buick LeSabre 1986-1999

Buick Park Avenue 1996-1999

Oldsmobile 88 1992-1999

Oldsmobile Delta 88 1986-1988

Pontiac Bonneville 1987-1999

  1. Remove the wiper blade and arm assemblies, as outlined earlier in this section.
  2.  
  3. Turn the ignition ON and the wiper switch OFF so the wiper motor returns to the park position.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten any necessary retainers and remove the air inlet screen assembly. Disconnect the washer hoses.

  1. Disconnect the wiper arm transmission drive link from the crank arm using a suitable wiper transmission separator tool.

  1. On some vehicles, it may be necessary to remove the nut from the ball crank and remove the crank arm.

  1. Detach the electrical connectors from the wiper motor. Remove the wiper motor mounting bolts/screws.

  1. Guide the crank arm through the hole in the dash/shroud upper panel, then remove the motor.

To install:

  1. Guide the crank arm through the hole in the dash/shroud upper panel, then place the motor into position.
  2.  
  3. Install the wiper motor mounting bolts/screws. Tighten to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Attach the electrical connectors to the motor.
  6.  
  7. Connect the wiper arm drive link socket to the crank arm ball using a suitable wiper transmission installation tool. Make sure the socket is fully seated on the ball.

  1. Install the air inlet screen assembly.

  3. Install the wiper arms, then connect the washer hoses.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable, then check the wiper motor operation.

Wiper Switch

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel, the cover and the lock plate assembly.
  4.  


CAUTION
Some vehicles are equipped with the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) or air bag system. The SIR system must be disabled before performing service on or around SIR system components, steering column, instrument panel components, wiring and sensors. Failure to follow safety and disabling procedures could result in accidental air bag deployment, possible personal injury and unnecessary SIR system repairs.

  1. Remove the turn signal actuator arm, the lever and the hazard flasher button.
  2.  
  3. Remove the turn signal switch screws, the lower steering column trim panel and the steering column bracket bolts.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the turn signal switch and the wiper switch connectors.
  6.  
  7. Pull the turn signal switch rearward 6-8 inches (15-20cm), remove the key buzzer switch and cylinder lock assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove and pull the steering column housing rearward. Remove the housing cover screw.
  10.  
  11. Remove the wiper switch pivot and the switch assembly.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the pivot and switch assembly.
  2.  
  3. Reposition and reinstall the steering column. Replace the housing cover screw.
  4.  
  5. Install the cylinder lock and key buzzer assembly. Reposition the turn signal switch.
  6.  
  7. Connect the turn signal switch and wiper switch connectors.
  8.  
  9. Install the steering column bracket bolts and the column trim panel.
  10.  
  11. Replace the turn signal switch screws.
  12.  
  13. Install the hazard flasher button, turn signal actuator arm and lever.
  14.  
  15. Install the lock plate assembly, cover and the steering wheel.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  

Wiper Arms



Removal & Installation

Wiper element replacement procedures are detailed in Section 1.

  1. With the wipers ON, turn the ignition OFF when the wiper arm is at the mid-wipe position.
  2.  
  3. Lift the wiper arm off the windshield, then disengage the retaining latch with a screwdriver or equivalent tool.
  4.

  1. Pull the wiper blade arm assembly from the transmission drive shaft.

  1. If necessary, lift the blade retaining latch and remove the blade from the arm.

To install:

The blade must be installed with the blade retaining latch pointed toward the passenger side of the vehicle.

  1. If removed, install the wiper blade on the arm.
  2.  
  3. With the ignition ON , turn the wiper/washer switch ON, and then OFF to return the transmission assembly to the park position.
  4.  
  5. Position the wiper arm and blade assembly slightly below the stop surface of the park ramp, then press the arm head casting fully onto the transmission drive shaft.
  6.  
  7. Push the wiper arm retaining latch in.
  8.  
  9. Lift the replaced arm assembly over the park ramp.
  10.  

The correct park position and outwipe dimension are determined with the wipers operating at low speed on wet glass.

  1. Inspect the wiper pattern. Dimension A (in the accompanying figure) should be 1 3 / 8 -1 3 / 4 in. (35-44mm) from the top of the driver's blade assembly on the outwipe edge of the glass.
