2-Wheel Drive

Specific to:

Nissan Pickup 1996-1997

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
    If working near and/or around the SRS system and components, be sure to disable the SRS system. After disabling the system wait three minutes or more before servicing the vehicle. Disconnect the air bag module connector.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies.
  8.  
  9. Thoroughly clean all parts and pack the wheel bearings.
  10.  
  11. Apply grease to threaded portions of the spindle, grease seal lip and wheel hub.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the wheel bearing locknut with a socket and torque wrench to 25-29 ft. lbs. (34-39 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Rotate the hub in both directions a few times to seat the bearings. Loosen wheel bearing locknut.
  16.  
  17. Retighten the locknut to 25-29 ft. lbs. (34-39 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Turn the wheel bearing locknut back 45 degrees.
  20.  
  21. Install the adjusting cap. Install the cotter pin. Align the cotter pin slot by loosening the nut 15 degrees or less.
  22.  
  23. Measure the wheel bearing preload. The axial endplay specification is 0.
  24.  
  25. Measure wheel bearing preload with a spring-type gauge; measure at wheel hub bolt, with tire removed. Specification should be 2-6 lbs. (0.10-28 Nm).

  27. Once specification is achieved, spread the cotter pin and install the cap.

4-Wheel Drive

Nissan Pickup 1996-1997

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
    If working near and/or around the SRS system and components, be sure to disable the SRS system. After disabling the system wait three minutes or more before servicing the vehicle. Disconnect the air bag module connector.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.

  7. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies.
  8.  
  9. Thoroughly clean all parts and pack the wheel bearings.
  10.  
  11. Apply grease to threaded portions of the spindle, grease seal lip and wheel hub.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the wheel bearing locknut with a socket and torque wrench to 58-72 ft. lbs. (78-98 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Rotate the hub in both directions a few times to seat the bearings. Loosen wheel bearing locknut.
  16.  
  17. Retighten the locknut to 4.8-13.2 inch lbs. (0.5-1.5 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Turn wheel hub several times in both directions.
  20.  
  21. Retighten the locknut to 4.8-13.2 inch lbs. (0.5-1.5 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Measure wheel bearing axial end-play. The wheel bearing end-play specification is 0.
  24.  
  25. Install lock washer by tightening the locknut within 15-30 degrees.
  26.  
  27. Turn wheel hub several times in both directions. Wheel bearing should be seated correctly.
  28.  
  29. If necessary, measure wheel bearing preload.
  30.  

Measure wheel bearing preload with a spring-type gauge; measure at wheel hub bolt, with tire removed. The hub assembly should rotate with 19-56 inch lbs. (0.73-2.13 kg) of pressure.
