Transmission Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
    Be sure that you have the anti-theft codes for the audio system and navigation system, if equipped. Record the audio presets.

  3. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  4.  
  5. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. Wait 3 minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing any service.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Secure the hood in the wide open position using a support rod.
  12.  
  13. Position the wheels in the straight ahead position.
  14.  
  15. Drain the power steering reservoir. Properly dispose of used fluid.
  16.  
  17. Remove the battery hold down bracket, battery and battery tray.
  18.  
  19. Remove the intake manifold cover and intake manifold duct.
  20.  
  21. Remove the battery base and base bracket.
  22.  
  23. Remove the front bulkhead cover.
  24.  
  25. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Remove the splash shield.
  28.  
  29. Drain the transmission fluid. Properly dispose of used fluid. Be sure to use a new sealing washer when reinstalling the drain plug.

  31. Disconnect the steering joint.

  33. Remove the power steering pump outlet line from the pump. Remove the hose and clamp bolt.
  34.  
  35. Remove the transmission breather tube from the breather pipe at the transmission housing.

  37. Disconnect the solenoid harness connector. Disconnect the starter cables, and remove the harness clamps and brackets.

  39. Remove the dipstick, then remove the starter and gasket.

  41. Remove the nuts securing the shift cable bracket.
  42.  
  43. Remove the spring clip/washer and control pin. Separate the shift cable end from the control lever.
  44.  
  45. Check the bushing in the shift cable end for proper fit and wear. Replace as required.

  47. Remove the bolt securing the harness cover.
  48.  
  49. Remove the harness clamp, from the harness cover/clamp bracket. Disconnect the fourth clutch transmission fluid pressure switch connector. Remove the harness cover from the bracket.

  51. Disconnect the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve A connector and the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve B connector.
  52.  
  53. Disconnect the A/t clutch pressure control solenoid valve C connector.
  54.  
  55. Remove the bolts securing the harness cover and harness cover/clamp bracket.
  56.  
  57. Disconnect the transmission range selector switch connector and remove the harness clamp from the clamp bracket.
  58.  
  59. Remove the transmission ground cable.
  60.  
  61. Remove the fluid line hoses from the cooler lines. Plug the lines.
  62.  
  63. Disconnect the input shaft speed sensor connector, the output shaft speed sensor connector, the temperature sensor connector and the third clutch transmission fluid pressure switch connector.
  64.  
  65. Remove the connector bracket from the engine front cylinder head.
    NOTE
    Use the bracket bolt to connect the engine hanger balancer bar front arm.

  67. Remove the harness clamp bracket from the engine rear cylinder head.
    NOTE
    Use the bracket bolt to connect the engine hanger balancer bar rear arm.

  69. Install the engine hanger balance bar. Install the engine hanger adapters. See illustration.

  71. If equipped with 4WD, remove the front mount nut.
  72.  
  73. If equipped with 2WD, remove the front mount stop and front mount bolt.

  75. Remove the subframe stiffener.

  77. Remove the exhaust pipe and its mount.

  79. Remove the lock pins and castle nuts. Separate the lower arms from the knuckles.

  81. Separate the stabilizer link.

  83. Remove the cotter pins and nuts and separate the tie rod end ball joints from the knuckles.

  85. If equipped with 4WD, remove the bolt retaining the transfer breather tube bracket. Disconnect the breather tube from the breather pipe on the transfer case.

  87. If equipped with 4WD, matchmark the propeller shaft and companion flange. Separate the two components.
  88.  
  89. Remove the transfer case from the transmission.

  91. Remove the torque converter cover. Remove the driveplate bolts while rotating the crankshaft.

  93. Disconnect the power steering pressure switch connector. Remove the power steering hose from the hose clamp at the right front subframe.

  95. Loosen the hose clamp bolt and disconnect the hose from the fluid line.
  96.  
  97. Remove the four transmission lower mount retaining nuts.

  99. If equipped with 2WD, disconnect the engine mount control solenoid valve connector. Remove the harness clamp from the subframe.

  101. Make reference marks on the body across the marks on the edge of the front subframe.

  103. If equipped with 4WD, remove the three rear mount bracket bolts. Remove the four rear mount bracket bolts.

  105. If equipped with 2WD, disconnect the engine control mount solenoid valve connector and remove the harness clamp.

  107. Remove the bolt securing the power steering fluid line bracket on the rear mount bracket.
  108.  
  109. Loosen the four bolts on the subframe adapter. Install the tool on a suitable transmission jack.

  111. Raise the jack to vehicle height. Attach the adapter tool to the front subframe using the subframe stiffener mounting bolts and bolt holes.

  113. Remove both retainers securing the rear mounting bolt and nut of the front subframe.
  114.  
  115. Remove the six bolts securing the front stiffeners and rear stiffeners, and four bolts securing the front subframe. Lower the front subframe.

  117. Remove the transmission lower mounts.

  119. Remove the halfshafts from the differential and intermediate shaft.

  121. Remove the exhaust manifold bracket and heat shield. Remove the intermediate shaft.

  123. Remove the upper transmission housing mounting bolts. Remove the lower transmission housing mounting bolts.

  125. Remove the front mount bracket. Remove the transmission housing mounting bolt.

  127. Remove the rear transmission housing mounting bolts.

  129. Place a suitable transmission jack under the transmission.
  130.  
  131. Lower the transmission by loosening the wing nut of the engine support hanger tool, and tilt the engine just enough for the transmission to clear its end from the side frame.

  133. Slide the transmission away from the engine and remove it from the vehicle.
  134.  
  135. Remove the torque converter and dowel pins.
  136.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the transmission lower mounts to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm). Tighten the lower transmission housing bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Tighten the rear transmission housing bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm). Tighten the upper transmission housing bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm). Tighten the transmission housing bolt to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Tighten the front mount bracket bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm) (2WD) and 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm) (4WD). Be sure to use new bolts.
  8.  
  9. Loosely install the subframe mounting bolts.

  11. Tighten the bolts on the rear mounting to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm).
  12.  
  13. On 4WD, tighten the three rear mount bracket bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm).
  14.  
  15. On 2WD, tighten the two mount bracket bolts on the rear bracket to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm) Be sure to use new bolts on the front.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the transmission lower mounting nuts to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Tighten the torque converter to drive plate bolts to 8.7 ft. lbs. (11.8 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Tighten the transfer case to transmission bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
  22.  
  23. On 4WD vehicles, tighten the driveshaft bolts to 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Be sure to replace bolts and fasteners, as required.
  26.  
  27. Fill the transmission with the proper grade and type fluid.
  28.  
  29. Fill the power steering reservoir with the proper grade and type fluid.
  30.  
  31. Connect the steering joint.
  32.  
  33. Remove the steering wheel. Center the SRS cable reel. Reinstall the steering wheel.
    NOTE
    The power window reset procedure must be performed when disconnecting the battery, removing the No. 1 (20 amp) fuse in the passenger-s under dash fuse/relay box, disconnecting the 18P connector from the power window control unit, removing the window regulator, glass or glass run channel and disconnecting the driver-s door wire harness.

  35. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  36.  
  37. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  38.  
  39. Move the driver-s power window all the way down by holding the driver-s power window switch firmly down to the second detent. When the window reaches the bottom, hold the driver-s power window switch in the AUTO DOWN position for two seconds.
  40.  
  41. Move the driver-s power window all the way up without stopping by holding the driver-s power window switch firmly up to the second detent. When the window reaches the top, hold the driver-s power window switch in the AUTO UP position for two seconds.
    NOTE
    If the power window does not work in AUTO, repeat the procedure.

  43. Check and adjust the front end alignment.
  44.  
  45. Road test the vehicle. Correct problems, as required.
