The Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor senses the TDC point of the number one cylinder, on its compression stroke. Its signal is relayed to the PCM to be used to determine the sequence of fuel injection.

Removal & Installation

NOTE
Be sure that you have the anti-theft codes for the audio system and navigation system, if equipped. Record the audio presets.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. Wait 3 minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing any service.
  6.  
  7. Remove the timing belt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front crankshaft pulley.

  11. Disconnect the sensor connector.
  12.  
  13. Remove the back cover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the sensor from the back cover.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the sensor retaining bolt to 3 ft. lbs. (4 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Perform the CKP pattern clear/relearn procedure as follows.
    NOTE
    The Honda Diagnostic Service (HDS) tool should be used to perform this operation. Follow the directions using the HDS tool. If the tool is not available, precede as indicated below.

  7. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3000 rpm-s, without a load in either PARK or NEUTRAL until the radiator fan comes on.
  8.  
  9. Test drive the vehicle on a level road. Decelerate with the throttle fully closed from an engine speed of 2500 rpm-s down to 1000 rpm-s with the transmission in the 2 position.
  10.  
  11. Test drive the vehicle on a level road. Decelerate with the throttle fully closed from an engine speed of 5000 rpm-s down to 3000 rpm-s with the transmission in the 2 position.
  12.  
  13. Repeat the above steps several times.
  14.  
  15. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  16.  
  17. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (O). Turn the ignition switch to ON (II) and wait thirty seconds.
