The Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor sends a voltage signal from the sensor to the PCM to indicate engine rpm and the position of the crankshaft.

Removal & Installation

NOTE
Be sure that you have the anti-theft codes for the audio system and navigation system, if equipped. Record the audio presets.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. Wait 3 minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing any service.
  6.  
  7. Remove the timing belt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the crankshaft pulley.

  11. Remove the upper and lower front covers.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the sensor connector.
  14.  
  15. Remove the sensor retaining bolt and nuts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the sensor from the oil pump.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the sensor retaining nuts to 7 ft. lbs. (9 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Perform the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor pattern clear/relearn procedure as follows.
    NOTE
    The Honda Diagnostic Service (HDS) tool should be used to perform this operation. Follow the directions using the HDS tool. If the tool is not available, precede as indicated below.

  7. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3000 rpm-s, without a load in either PARK or NEUTRAL until the radiator fan comes on.
  8.  
  9. Test drive the vehicle on a level road. Decelerate with the throttle fully closed from an engine speed of 2500 rpm-s down to 1000 rpm-s with the transmission in the 2 position.
  10.  
  11. Test drive the vehicle on a level road. Decelerate with the throttle fully closed from an engine speed of 5000 rpm-s down to 3000 rpm-s with the transmission in the 2 position.
  12.  
  13. Repeat the above steps several times.
  14.  
  15. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  16.  
  17. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (O). Turn the ignition switch to ON (II) and wait thirty seconds.
