Inspection



J35A9 Engine

Specific to:

Honda Pilot 2006-2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Inspect the belt for cracks and/or damage.
  4.  
  5. If damage exists, replace the belt.
  6.  
  7. Check that the auto tensioner indicator is within range. If not replace the belt.

J35Z1 Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Inspect the belt for cracks and/or damage.
  4.  
  5. If damage exists, replace the belt.
  6.  
  7. Check that the auto tensioner indicator on the oil pump is not beyond the edge of the indicator rib on the auto tensioner.
  8.  
  9. If the pointer is beyond the indicator rib, replace the drive belt.

Removal & Installation



J35A9 Engine
Auto Tensioner Assembly

Honda Pilot 2006-2008


NOTE
Be sure that you have the anti-theft codes for the audio system and navigation system, if equipped. Record the audio presets.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. Wait 3 minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing any service.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the positive battery cable.

  9. Move the auto tensioner, using the belt tension release tool from the drive belt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the belt.
  12.  
  13. Remove the splash shield.

  15. Remove the auto tensioner.
  16.  
  17. To replace the pulley, remove the pulley bolt. Remove the pulley.
    NOTE
    The bolt has left hand threads.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use new bolts, as required.
    NOTE
    The power window reset procedure must be performed when disconnecting the battery, removing the No. 1 (20 amp) fuse in the passenger-s under dash fuse/relay box, disconnecting the 18P connector from the power window control unit, removing the window regulator, glass or glass run channel and disconnecting the driver-s door wire harness.

  4.  
  5. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  6.  
  7. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  8.  
  9. Move the driver-s power window all the way down by holding the driver-s power window switch firmly down to the second detent. When the window reaches the bottom, hold the driver-s power window switch in the AUTO DOWN position for two seconds.
  10.  
  11. Move the driver-s power window all the way up without stopping by holding the driver-s power window switch firmly up to the second detent. When the window reaches the top, hold the driver-s power window switch in the AUTO UP position for two seconds.
    NOTE
    If the power window does not work in AUTO, repeat the procedure.

  9. Position a socket wrench to the drive belt auto tensioner and slowly turn the wrench in the direction shown in the illustration.
    NOTE
    This is a hydraulic type auto tensioner, so you must turn the wrench slowly.

  11. Remove the belt.
  12.  
  13. Remove the splash shield.

  15. Remove the auto tensioner.

To install:
