J35A9 Engine

Specific to:

Honda Pilot 2006-2008


NOTE
Be sure that you have the anti-theft codes for the audio system and navigation system, if equipped. Record the audio presets.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. Wait 3 minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing any service.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cylinder head.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rocker arms.
  12.  
  13. Install the rocker shafts on the cylinder head. Tighten to specification and in sequence (see illustration), 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).

  15. Seat the camshaft by pushing it toward the rear of the cylinder head.
  16.  
  17. Zero the dial indicator gauge against the end of the camshaft. Push the camshaft back and forth and read the endplay. If specification is beyond the service limit, replace the thrust cover and recheck. If still not within specification, replace the camshaft.
  18.  
  19. Service specification (new) is 0.002-0.008 in. Service limit is 0.008 in.

  21. Remove the camshaft thrust cover. Pull out the camshaft.
  22.  
  23. Wipe the camshaft clean, inspect the lift ramps. Replace the camshaft if any of the lobes are pitted, scored or excessively worn.
  24.  
  25. Measure the diameter of each camshaft journal.

  27. Zero the gauge to the journal diameter.
  28.  
  29. Clean the camshaft bearing surfaces in the cylinder head. Measure the inside diameter of each bearing surface. Check for an out of round condition.
  30.  
  31. Check the camshaft to holder clearance. Standard (new) specification should be 0.0020-0.0035 in. Service limit is 0.006 in.
  32.  
  33. If the camshaft to holder clearance is within specification, measure the cam lobe height.
  34.  
  35. Specification is PRI 1.3796 in., MID 1.4348 in. and SEC 1.3891 inch for intake cam lobes and PRI 1.4302 in. for exhaust lobes.

  37. If the camshaft to holder clearance is beyond specification and the camshaft has been replaced, replace the cylinder head.
  38.  
  39. If the camshaft to holder clearance is beyond specification and the camshaft has not been replaced, Check the total runout with the camshaft supported in V-blocks.
  40.  
  41. Standard (new) specification should be 0.001 in. max. Service limit is 0.002 in.
  42.  
  43. If runout is within specification, replace the cylinder head.
  44.  
  45. If runout is beyond service limit, replace the camshaft and recheck. If still out of specification, replace the cylinder head.

J35Z1 Engine

  3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. Wait 3 minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing any service.

  7. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cylinder head.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rocker arms.
  12.  
  13. Install the front rocker shafts on the cylinder head. Tighten to specification and in sequence (see illustration), 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).

  15. Install the rear rocker shaft bridge and rocker shaft holder. Tighten to specification and in sequence (see illustration), 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).

  39. Specification for rear camshaft is 1.3817 in. for intake cam lobes and 1.4374 in. for exhaust lobes.

  41. If the camshaft to holder clearance is beyond specification and the camshaft has been replaced, replace the cylinder head.

Removal & Installation



Front Camshaft

Specific to:

Honda Pilot 2006-2008


NOTE
Be sure that you have the anti-theft codes for the audio system and navigation system, if equipped. Record the audio presets.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. Wait 3 minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing any service.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Remove the battery and the battery tray.

  11. Drain the engine coolant. Properly dispose of used coolant.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper radiator hose. Remove the EGR valve. Discard the gasket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the timing belt.
  16.  
  17. Remove the rocker arm assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove the front camshaft pulley.
  20.  
  21. Remove the thrust cover. Remove the camshaft.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Always use a new O-ring.
  4.  
  5. Apply clean engine oil to the camshaft lobes.
  6.  
  7. Apply clean engine oil to the camshaft mounting bolt.
  8.  
  9. Be sure to use new bolts, as required.
  10.  
  11. Adjust the valve clearance.
  12.  
  13. Perform the CKP pattern clear/relearn procedure as follows.
    NOTE
    The Honda Diagnostic Service (HDS) tool should be used to perform this operation. Follow the directions using the HDS tool. If the tool is not available, precede as indicated below.

  15. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3000 rpm-s, without a load in either PARK or NEUTRAL until the radiator fan comes on.
  16.  
  17. Test drive the vehicle on a level road. Decelerate with the throttle fully closed from an engine speed of 2500 rpm-s down to 1000 rpm-s with the transmission in the 2 position.
  18.  
  19. Test drive the vehicle on a level road. Decelerate with the throttle fully closed from an engine speed of 5000 rpm-s down to 3000 rpm-s with the transmission in the 2 position.
  20.  
  21. Repeat the above steps several times.
  22.  
  23. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  24.  
  25. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (O). Turn the ignition switch to ON (II) and wait thirty seconds.
    NOTE
    The PCM idle learn procedure must be performed when the PCM is replaced, the PCM is reset, the PCM is updated and the throttle body is replaced or cleaned.


    NOTE
    Erasing DTC-s with the HDS tool, does not require you to do the relearn procedure.


    NOTE
    The Honda Diagnostic Service (HDS) tool should be used to perform this operation. Follow the directions using the HDS tool.

  27. Perform the PCM idle learn procedure as follows. Make sure that all electrical items are OFF.
  28.  
  29. Using the HDS, reset the PCM .
  30.  
  31. Turn the ignition switch ON (II) and wait two seconds.
  32.  
  33. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3000 rpm-s without a load (PARK or NEUTRAL) until the radiator fan comes on or the engine operating temperature reaches 194° F.
  34.  
  35. Let the engine idle for about five minutes, with the throttle fully closed.
    NOTE
    If the radiator fan comes on do not include its running time in the five minutes.


    NOTE
    The power window reset procedure must be performed when disconnecting the battery, removing the No. 1 (20 amp) fuse in the passenger-s under dash fuse/relay box, disconnecting the 18P connector from the power window control unit, removing the window regulator, glass or glass run channel and disconnecting the driver-s door wire harness.

  37. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  38.  
  39. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  40.  
  41. Move the driver-s power window all the way down by holding the driver-s power window switch firmly down to the second detent. When the window reaches the bottom, hold the driver-s power window switch in the AUTO DOWN position for two seconds.
  42.  
  43. Move the driver-s power window all the way up without stopping by holding the driver-s power window switch firmly up to the second detent. When the window reaches the top, hold the driver-s power window switch in the AUTO UP position for two seconds.
    NOTE
    If the power window does not work in AUTO, repeat the procedure.

Rear Camshaft

NOTE
Be sure that you have the anti-theft codes for the audio system and navigation system, if equipped. Record the audio presets.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. Wait 3 minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing any service.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Remove the nuts securing the EVAP canister purge valve joint.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake lines from the master cylinder. Plug the brake lines.
  12.  
  13. Remove the timing belt.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rocker arm assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the rear camshaft pulley.
  18.  
  19. Remove the thrust cover. Remove the camshaft.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

  25. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (O). Turn the ignition switch to ON (II) and wait thirty seconds.
    NOTE
    The PCM idle learn procedure must be performed when the PCM is replaced, the PCM is reset, the PCM is updated and the throttle body is replaced or cleaned.


    NOTE
