NOTE
Be sure that you have the anti-theft codes for the audio system and navigation system, if equipped. Record the audio presets.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. Wait 3 minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing any service.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pump from the engine.
  10.  
  11. Remove the screws from the pump housing. Separate the cover and the housing.
  12.  
  13. Check the inner to outer radial clearance between the inner rotor and the outer rotor. If clearance exceeds the service limit specification, replace the pump. Standard (new) specification is 0.002-0.006 in. Service limit specification is 0.008 in.

  15. Check the housing to rotor axial clearance between the rotors and the pump housing. If clearance exceeds the service limit specification, replace the pump. Standard (new) specification is 0.001-0.003 in. Service limit specification is 0.005 inch.

  17. Check the housing to outer rotor radial clearance between the outer rotor and the pump housing. If clearance exceeds the service limit specification, replace the pump. Standard (new) specification is 0.004-0.007 in. Service limit specification is 0.008 in.

  19. Inspect both rotors and the pump housing for scoring or other damage. Replace parts, as required.
  20.  
  21. Apply liquid thread lock to the pump housing screws, then install the oil pump cover.
  22.  
  23. Check that the pump turns freely.
  24.  
  25. Install the oil pump.
    NOTE
    The power window reset procedure must be performed when disconnecting the battery, removing the No. 1 (20 amp) fuse in the passenger-s under dash fuse/relay box, disconnecting the 18P connector from the power window control unit, removing the window regulator, glass or glass run channel and disconnecting the driver-s door wire harness.

  27. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  28.  
  29. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  30.  
  31. Move the driver-s power window all the way down by holding the driver-s power window switch firmly down to the second detent. When the window reaches the bottom, hold the driver-s power window switch in the AUTO DOWN position for two seconds.
  32.  
  33. Move the driver-s power window all the way up without stopping by holding the driver-s power window switch firmly up to the second detent. When the window reaches the top, hold the driver-s power window switch in the AUTO UP position for two seconds.
    NOTE
    If the power window does not work in AUTO, repeat the procedure.

Removal & Installation

NOTE

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. Wait 3 minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing any service.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Position a suitable jack under the oil pan.
  12.  
  13. Drain the engine oil. Properly dispose of used oil.
  14.  
  15. Remove the timing belt.

  17. Remove the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor.
  18.  
  19. Attach the chain hoist to the engine hanger on the power steering pump bracket.

  21. Remove the jack from under the oil pan.
  22.  
  23. Remove the oil pan.
  24.  
  25. On the J35A9 engine, remove the rocker arm oil control solenoid/oil filter assembly.

  27. On the J35Z1 engine, remove the oil filter base/oil filter assembly.

  29. Remove the oil pan.
  30.  
  31. Remove the oil screen.

  33. Remove the oil pump retaining bolts. Remove the oil pump from its mounting.

To install:

  1. Remove the old seal from the pump. Tap in a new seal until the oil seal driver tool bottoms the pump

  3. Remove any old gasket material from the oil pump mating surface, bolt and bolt holes.
  4.  
  5. Apply liquid gasket part number 08717-0004 or equivalent to the engine block mating surface of the oil pump.
    NOTE
    Install the component within five minutes of applying the liquid gasket. Some liquid gasket materials require installation within four minutes. Be sure to read and follow the manufacturer-s instruction. If too much time has passed before installing the component remove the liquid gasket and residue, then reapply new liquid gasket.

  7. Grease the lip of the oil seal, and apply clean engine oil to the new O-ring.
  8.  
  9. Install the dowel pins, then align the inner rotor with the crankshaft. Install the oil pump. Tighten the retaining bolts to 8.8 ft. lbs. (11.9 Nm).
    NOTE
    Wait at least 30 minutes to allow the gasket to cure before filling the engine with oil.


    NOTE
    Do not run the engine for at least three hours after installing the oil pan.

  11. Clean the excess grease off the crankshaft, and check the seal for distortion.
  12.  
  13. Install the oil screen, using a new O-ring.
  14.  
  15. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
    NOTE
    The power window reset procedure must be performed when disconnecting the battery, removing the No. 1 (20 amp) fuse in the passenger-s under dash fuse/relay box, disconnecting the 18P connector from the power window control unit, removing the window regulator, glass or glass run channel and disconnecting the driver-s door wire harness.

  17. Turn the ignition switch OFF.

  19. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).

  23. Move the driver-s power window all the way up without stopping by holding the driver-s power window switch firmly up to the second detent. When the window reaches the top, hold the driver-s power window switch in the AUTO UP position for two seconds.
    NOTE
    If the power window does not work in AUTO, repeat the procedure.

  25. Perform the CKP pattern clear/relearn procedure as follows.
    NOTE
    The Honda Diagnostic Service (HDS) tool should be used to perform this operation. Follow the directions using the HDS tool. If the tool is not available, precede as indicated below.

  27. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3000 rpm-s, without a load in either PARK or NEUTRAL until the radiator fan comes on.
  28.  
  29. Test drive the vehicle on a level road. Decelerate with the throttle fully closed from an engine speed of 2500 rpm-s down to 1000 rpm-s with the transmission in the 2 position.
  30.  
  31. Test drive the vehicle on a level road. Decelerate with the throttle fully closed from an engine speed of 5000 rpm-s down to 3000 rpm-s with the transmission in the 2 position.
  32.  
  33. Repeat the above steps several times.
  34.  
  35. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  36.  
  37. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (O). Turn the ignition switch to ON (II) and wait thirty seconds.
