Removal & Installation




NOTE
Be sure that you have the anti-theft codes for the audio system and navigation system, if equipped. Record the audio presets.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. Wait 3 minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing any service.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Turn the crankshaft so that the white mark (on the crankshaft pulley) aligns with the pointer mark.
  10.  
  11. Check that the No. 1 piston TDC mark on the front camshaft pulley and the pointer on the upper front cover are aligned.
    NOTE
    If the marks are not aligned, rotate the crankshaft 360 degrees, and recheck.

  13. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the right front tire and wheel assembly.

  15. Remove the splash shield.

  17. Remove the drive belt.
  18.  
  19. Support the engine using a piece of wood and a jack under the oil pan.
  20.  
  21. Remove the upper half of the side engine mount bracket.

  23. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  24.  
  25. Remove the upper front cover retaining bolts. Remove the cover.

  27. Remove the lower rear cover retaining bolts. Remove the cover.

  29. Remove the lower cover retaining bolts. Remove the lower cover.

  31. Remove one of the battery clamp bolts from the battery tray. Grind the end, as shown in the illustration.

  33. Thread the battery clamp bolt, as shown in the illustration, to hold the timing belt adjuster in its current position.
    NOTE
    Tighten by hand. Do not use a wrench.

  35. Remove the timing belt guide plate.

  37. Remove the lower half side of the engine mount bracket.

  39. Remove the idler pulley bolt and the idler pulley. Remover the timing belt. Discard the idler pulley bolt.

  41. Clean the timing belt pulleys, guide plate and upper and lower covers.

To install:

  1. Set the timing belt drive pulley to TDC, by aligning the TDC mark on the tooth of the timing belt drive pulley with the pointer on the oil pump.

  3. Set the camshaft pulleys to TDC by aligning the TDC marks on the camshaft covers with the pointers on the back covers.
  4.  
  5. Remove the battery clamp bolt from the back cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the auto-tensioner.

  9. Align the holes on the rod and housing of the tensioner.
  10.  
  11. Use a hydraulic press to slowly compress the tensioner. Insert a 0.08 in. pin through the housing and the rod.
    NOTE
    Hydraulic press compression pressure should not exceed 2,200 lbs.

  13. Install the auto-tensioner. Be sure that the pin stays in place.

  15. Thread the battery clamp bolt, as shown in the illustration, to hold the timing belt adjuster in its current position.
    NOTE
    Tighten by hand. Do not use a wrench.

  17. Loosely install the idler pulley, using a new idler pulley bolt, so the pulley can move but does not come off.
  18.  
  19. Install the timing belt in a counterclockwise sequence starting with the drive pulley. Refer to illustration for sequence. Sequence is as follows: drive pulley, idler pulley, front camshaft pulley, water pump pulley, rear camshaft pulley and adjusting pulley.

  21. Tighten the idler pulley bolt to specification. Specification is 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).

  23. Remove the pin from the auto-tensioner.
  24.  
  25. Remove the battery clamp bolt from the back cover.
  26.  
  27. Install the lower half of the side engine mount bracket.
  28.  
  29. Install the timing belt guide plate, as shown in the illustration.

  31. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
    NOTE
    The power window reset procedure must be performed when disconnecting the battery, removing the No. 1 (20 amp) fuse in the passenger-s under dash fuse/relay box, disconnecting the 18P connector from the power window control unit, removing the window regulator, glass or glass run channel and disconnecting the driver-s door wire harness.

  33. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  34.  
  35. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  36.  
  37. Move the driver-s power window all the way down by holding the driver-s power window switch firmly down to the second detent. When the window reaches the bottom, hold the driver-s power window switch in the AUTO DOWN position for two seconds.

  39. Move the driver-s power window all the way up without stopping by holding the driver-s power window switch firmly up to the second detent. When the window reaches the top, hold the driver-s power window switch in the AUTO UP position for two seconds.
    NOTE
    If the power window does not work in AUTO, repeat the procedure.
