Steering Knuckles

Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Honda Pilot 2006-2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Make sure that the front tire and wheel assemblies are in the straight ahead position.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake hose mounting bolt. Remove the brake caliper mounting bolts. Remove the caliper assembly from the knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Properly support the caliper. Do not support it from the brake hose. Do not bend or twist the brake hose.
  12.  
  13. Remove the wheel speed sensor from the knuckle. Do not disconnect the sensor connector.
  14.  
  15. Raise the stake of the spindle nut. Remove and discard the nut.
  16.  
  17. Remove the rotor.
  18.  
  19. Check the hub for damage and cracks.
  20.  
  21. Remove the cotter pin from the tie rod end ball joint. Loosen the nut. Discard the cotter pin and nut.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the tie rod ball joint from the knuckle, using the proper removal tool.
  24.  
  25. Remove the lock pin from the lower ball joint. Remove and discard the castle nut.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the tie rod ball joint from the knuckle, using the proper removal tool.
    WARNING
    Do not force or hammer on the lower arm, or pry between the lower arm and the knuckle as you could damage the ball joint.

  29. Remove the strut pinch bolts and flange bolts from the strut. Discard them.
  30.  
  31. Remove the halfshaft outboard joint from the knuckle by tapping the halfshaft end with a plastic hammer.
    WARNING
    Do not pull the halfshaft end outward. The halfshaft inboard joint may come apart.

  33. Remove the knuckle.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use new mounting bolts and nuts, as required.
    NOTE
    First install all suspension components and lightly tighten the bolts and nuts, then raise the suspension to load it with the vehicles weight before fully tightening the nuts and bolts to specification.

  4.  
  5. Tighten the lower strut mounting bolts to 116 ft. lbs. (157 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Check and adjust the wheel alignment, as required.
  8.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Make sure that the front tire and wheel assemblies are in the straight ahead position.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake hose mounting bolts from the trailing arm. Remove the brake hose mounting bolts from the knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the caliper mounting bolts. Remove the caliper. Position it to the side. Do not allow it to hang by the brake hose. Do not twist the brake hose.
  12.  
  13. Remove the wheel sensor harness from the knuckle. Do not disconnect the wheel sensor connector.
  14.  
  15. Raise the locknut stake of the spindle. Remove and discard the nut.
  16.  
  17. On 2WD models, remove the rear axle shaft from the knuckle.
  18.  
  19. Release the parking brake. Remove the brake disc from the rear hub.
  20.  
  21. Remove the parking brake shoes and parking brake cable.
  22.  
  23. Remove the lock pin from the upper arm ball joint. Remove the castle nut. Discard the nut.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the upper arm ball joint from the knuckle using the proper tool.
  26.  
  27. Remove the self locking nut, washer and flange bolt. Remove the lower arm -A-. Discard the self-locking nut.
  28.  
  29. Remove the flange bolts and separate the knuckle from the trailing arm. Discard the flange bolts.
  30.  
  31. Position a floor jack under the lower arm -B-. Remove the nut, washer and flange bolt. Discard them.
  32.  
  33. On 4WD vehicles, remove the knuckle while pushing in the halfshaft and holding the halfshaft outboard joint.
    WARNING
    Do not pull the halfshaft end outward. The halfshaft inboard joint may come apart.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
    NOTE
    First install all suspension components and lightly tighten the bolts and nuts, then raise the suspension to load it with the vehicles weight before fully tightening the nuts and bolts to specification.
