Front Halfshafts



Specific to:

Honda Pilot 2006-2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
    Be sure that you have the anti-theft codes for the audio system and navigation system, if equipped. Record the audio presets.

  3. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  4.  
  5. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. Wait 3 minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing any service.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies.
  14.  
  15. Lift the locking tab on the spindle. Remove and discard the locknut.
  16.  
  17. If removing the left shaft, drain the transmission fluid. Properly dispose of used fluid. Be sure to use a new drain plug washer.
  18.  
  19. Separate the front stabilizer link.
  20.  
  21. Remove the lock pin from the lower arm ball joint castle nut. Remove the nut.
  22.  
  23. Using the proper tool, separate the ball joint from the lower arm.
    WARNING
    Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot when installing the removal tool. To avoid damage to the joint, install a ball joint thread protector onto the threads of the ball joint.

  25. Pull the knuckle outward and separate the halfshaft outboard joint from the front wheel, using a plastic hammer.
  26.  
  27. To remove the right halfshaft, drive the inboard joint off of the intermediate shaft. Remove the halfshaft as an assembly.
    WARNING
    Do not pull on the halfshaft or the inboard joint may come apart.

  29. To remove the left halfshaft, pry the inboard joint from the transmission housing with a prybar. Remove the halfshaft as an assembly.
    WARNING
    Do not pull on the halfshaft or the inboard joint may come apart. Pull the halfshaft straight out to avoid damage to the oil seal.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use new clips, set rings and seals, as required.
    NOTE
    The power window reset procedure must be performed when disconnecting the battery, removing the No. 1 (20 amp) fuse in the passenger-s under dash fuse/relay box, disconnecting the 18P connector from the power window control unit, removing the window regulator, glass or glass run channel and disconnecting the driver-s door wire harness.

  5. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  6.  
  7. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  8.  
  9. Move the driver-s power window all the way down by holding the driver-s power window switch firmly down to the second detent. When the window reaches the bottom, hold the driver-s power window switch in the AUTO DOWN position for two seconds.
  10.  
  11. Move the driver-s power window all the way up without stopping by holding the driver-s power window switch firmly up to the second detent. When the window reaches the top, hold the driver-s power window switch in the AUTO UP position for two seconds.
    NOTE
    If the power window does not work in AUTO, repeat the procedure.

Intermediate Shaft

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
    Be sure that you have the anti-theft codes for the audio system and navigation system, if equipped. Record the audio presets.

  3. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  5. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. Wait 3 minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing any service.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies.
  14.  
  15. Drain the transmission fluid. Properly dispose of used fluid. Be sure to use a new drain plug washer.
  16.  
  17. Remove the right halfshaft.
  18.  
  19. Remove the subframe stiffener. Remove the exhaust pipe. Remove the WU-TWC bracket, flange bolt and two dowel pins.

  21. Remove the intermediate shaft from the differential.
    WARNING
    Hold the shaft horizontal until it is clear of the differential to prevent damage to the differential seal.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use new clips, set rings and seals, as required.
    NOTE

  11. Move the driver-s power window all the way up without stopping by holding the driver-s power window switch firmly up to the second detent. When the window reaches the top, hold the driver-s power window switch in the AUTO UP position for two seconds.
    NOTE
    If the power window does not work in AUTO, repeat the procedure.
