Adjustment



Specific to:

Honda Pilot 2006-2008

Minor parking brake adjustments (one or two clicks) can be made with the adjusting nut. If a larger adjustment is required, follow the major adjustment procedure.


NOTE
Depress the pedal to fully apply the parking brake. The pedal should be fully depressed after four or six clicks. Adjust the parking brake if not within specification.

Major Adjustment

Specific to:

Honda Pilot 2006-2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear tire and wheel assemblies.
  6.  
  7. Fully release the parking brake pedal.
  8.  
  9. Back off the adjusting nut in the parking brake pedal.

  11. Remove the access plug.
  12.  
  13. Turn the ratchet teeth on the adjuster nut until the shoes lock against the parking brake drum.
  14.  
  15. Perform the minor adjustment procedure.
  16.  

Minor Adjustment

Specific to:

Honda Pilot 2006-2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the adjusting nut until the parking brakes drag when the rear wheels are rotated.
  6.  
  7. Back off the parking brake adjusting nut in half-turn increments. Check for proper adjustment (four to six clicks) at a pedal force of 66 ft. lbs. (89 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Adjust, as required.

Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Honda Pilot 2006-2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. As required, remove a small amount of brake fluid from the reservoir using a suction pump.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  8.  
  9. Release the parking brake.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear brake caliper.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rear disc brake rotor.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect and remove the brake spring and the upper return spring.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect and remove the lower return spring.
  18.  
  19. Remove the tension pins, by pushing on the appropriate retainer springs and turning the pin.
  20.  
  21. Remove the connecting rod. Lower the parking brake shoe assembly.
  22.  
  23. Remove the forward brake shoe and the adjuster assembly by removing the lower return spring.
  24.  
  25. Remove the rearward brake shoe by disconnecting the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever.
  26.  
  27. Remove the U-clip, wave washer, parking brake lever and the pivot pin from the shoe.
  28.  

To install:


NOTE
Apply molybdenum brake grease to the sliding surface of the pivot pin, prior to installation.

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Install the wave washer with its convex side facing out.
  4.  
  5. Pinch the new U-clip securely to prevent the parking brake lever from coming out of the brake shoe.
    NOTE
    Apply molybdenum brake grease to surfaces indicated in the illustration.
