Removal & Installation

CAUTION
Be sure to review the SRS component locations before removing the steering column.


NOTE
Be sure that you have the anti-theft codes for the audio system and navigation system, if equipped. Record the audio presets.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. Wait 3 minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing any service.
  6.  
  7. Drain the power steering fluid.
  8.  
  9. Make sure that the front tire and wheel assemblies are in the straight ahead position.
  10.  
  11. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  12.  
  13. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies.
  14.  
  15. Remove the access panel from the steering wheel. Disconnect the airbag connector from the cable reel. Remove the two Torx® bolts. Remove the airbag.

  17. Disconnect the horn switch connector, radio remote connector, and the cruise control connectors.

  19. Loosen the steering wheel nut.
  20.  
  21. Install the steering wheel removal tool. Remove the steering wheel from its mounting using the tool. Remove the tool.

  23. Remove the steering wheel nut. Discard the nut.
  24.  
  25. Remove the steering wheel from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Before installing the steering wheel, be sure the front wheels are in the straight ahead position.
  2.  
  3. Center the cable reel (clock spring).
    NOTE
    Do this by first rotating the cable reel clockwise until it stops. Then rotate it counterclockwise about 2.5 turns, until the arrow mark on the cable reel label points straight up.

  5. Position the two tabs of the turn signal canceling sleeve as shown.

  7. Install the steering wheel. Do not tap on the wheel or the column when installing the steering wheel. Tighten the new steering wheel locknut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).

  9. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
    NOTE
    The power window reset procedure must be performed when disconnecting the battery, removing the No. 1 (20 amp) fuse in the passenger-s under dash fuse/relay box, disconnecting the 18P connector from the power window control unit, removing the window regulator, glass or glass run channel and disconnecting the driver-s door wire harness.

  11. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  12.  
  13. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  14.  
  15. Move the driver-s power window all the way down by holding the driver-s power window switch firmly down to the second detent. When the window reaches the bottom, hold the driver-s power window switch in the AUTO DOWN position for two seconds.

  17. Move the driver-s power window all the way up without stopping by holding the driver-s power window switch firmly up to the second detent. When the window reaches the top, hold the driver-s power window switch in the AUTO UP position for two seconds.
    NOTE
    If the power window does not work in AUTO, repeat the procedure.
