REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable and drain transaxle fluid into a suitable drain pan.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right and left engine vent covers.
  6.  
  7. Remove the throttle valve cable at fuel injection unit, shift cable at transaxle bracket and the neutral start/backup switch electrical connector at transaxle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the transaxle converter clutch, speedometer pickup and transaxle to engine electrical connectors.
  10.  
  11. Remove the transaxle cooler line support bracket.
  12.  
  13. Remove the five transaxle-to-engine retaining bolts.
  14.  
  15. Install the engine support fixture tool No. J-28467-A or equivalent.
  16.  
  17. Raise the vehicle and support with jackstands. Remove the rear wheel assemblies and install the rear halfshaft boot protectors if equipped with the gray silicone boots. For further assistance, refer to the "Halfshaft" removal procedures in this section.

  19. Remove the fixed adjusting link, lateral control arm through bolts and the trailing arms at the knuckle. Refer to the "Cradle" removal procedures in this section.
  20.  

Do NOT allow the Tri-Pod halfshaft joints to overextend. Overextending the joint may result in the separation of the internal components causing failure of the joint.

  1. Remove the rear halfshafts from the transaxle as outlined in the "Halfshaft" section in this section. Support the shafts to the body with wire.
  2.  
  3. Remove the splash shields, brake cables at calipers and brake control cable at the frame.
  4.  
  5. Remove the exhaust pipe-to-manifold attaching nuts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the two engine mount-to-cradle nuts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the two transaxle-to-cradle nuts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the two front and two rear cradle-to-body bolts and remove the cradle assembly with a jack.
  12.  
  13. Remove the starter/flexplate shield and flexplate bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove and plug the transaxle cooler lines and drain excess fluid into a drain pan.
  16.  
  17. Install a transaxle support jack.
  18.  
  19. Remove the two transaxle support brackets at back right.
  20.  
  21. Remove the remaining transaxle-to-engine retaining bolts and any other component needed to free the transaxle assembly from the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle slowly while watching for undisconnected items.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Position the transaxle assembly in the vehicle and engage the torque converter to the flexplate.
  2.  
  3. Install the transaxle-to-engine retaining bolts and ground wire.
  4.  
  5. Install the front and rear transaxle support brackets and remove the transaxle jack.
  6.  
  7. Unplug and reconnect the transaxle cooler lines.
  8.  
  9. Install the flexplate-to-torque converter bolt and install starter/flexplate shield.
  10.  
  11. Install the cradle to the body and the two rear and two front cradle retaining bolts.
  12.  
  13. Install the two transaxle-to-cradle mount nuts and the two engine-to-cradle mount nuts.
  14.  
  15. Install the exhaust pipe-to-manifold nuts.
  16.  
  17. Install the brake control cable-to-frame and the brake cable-to-calipers.
  18.  
  19. Install the splash shields and disconnect the rear halfshaft from the support. Install the halfshaft into the transaxle as outlined in the "Halfshaft" installation procedures in this section.
  20.  
  21. Install the trailing arms at knuckle and torque the bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm) +90° turn.
  22.  
  23. Install the fixed adjusting/lateral control arm through bolts and torque to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) +90° turn.
  24.  
  25. Remove the halfshaft boot protectors if used.
  26.  
  27. Install the rear wheels and torque the lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Remove the jackstands and lower the vehicle safely. Remove the engine support fixture tool J-28467-A.
  30.  
  31. Install the neutral start/backup switch harness and the shift cable bracket.
  32.  
  33. Install the remaining transaxle-to-engine retaining bolts and the cooler line support bracket.
  34.  
  35. Reconnect the engine, speedometer, converter clutch and neutral start switch wiring connectors.
  36.  
  37. Install the shift cable-to-transaxle bracket and the throttle valve cable-to-fuel injection unit.
  38.  
  39. Install the left and right engine vent covers.
  40.  
  41. Install the air cleaner.
  42.  
  43. Refill the transaxle with the specified amount of Dexron® II automatic transaxle fluid. Refer to the "Fluid Pan" procedures in this section or the "Automatic Transaxle Fluid Change" Procedure in .
  44.  
  45. Recheck all previous procedures to check for proper installation and a completed job.
  46.  
  47. Reconnect the negative (-) battery cable, start the vehicle and check fluid level and after fluid level has been obtained, road test to check for proper operation.
