REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable. Remove the air cleaner and the EFI bracket tube.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle and support it with jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the exhaust pipe and lower the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the battery side cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oxygen sensor connector.
  10.  
  11. Remove the dipstick tube at the manifold.
  12.  
  13. Remove the retaining bolts and washers and remove the exhaust manifold and gasket.
  14.  
  15. Clean the sealing surfaces and use a new gasket.
  16.  
  17. Install the exhaust manifold with a new gasket. Torque the retaining bolts to the sequence shown in the illustration. Torque bolts No. 1,2,6, and 7 to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm). Torque bolts No. 3,4, and 5 to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).

  19. Install the dipstick tube.
  20.  
  21. Raise the vehicle and support with jackstands.
  22.  
  23. Install the exhaust pipe and new gasket. Tighten the two bolts and spring assemblies to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).

  25. Lower the vehicle. Install the air cleaner, oxygen sensor and battery side cover.
  26.  
  27. Connect the negative (-) battery cable and start the engine and check for exhaust leaks.

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Scribe the engine compartment lid hinges for proper reinstallation. Remove the rear compartment lid with an assistant.
  4.  


CAUTION
Personal injury may result if the engine compartment lid torsion rod retaining bolts are removed. The torsion bolts do not have to be removed to remove the compartment lid.

  1. Remove the brake vacuum hose.
  2.  
  3. Remove the manifold heat shield.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front crossover bolts.
  6.  
  7. Raise the car and support with jackstands. Remove the front converter heat shield and the lower manifold bolts.
  8.  
  9. Lower the car and remove the upper manifold bolts then remove the manifold.
  10.  

To install:

  1. With a new gasket, install manifold and torque the upper bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Raise the car and support with jackstands. Torque the lower bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the front converter heat shield.
  6.  
  7. Lower the car and torque the crossover bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the manifold heat shield and brake vacuum hose.
  10.  
  11. Install the engine compartment lid in the same location as removed with an assistant. Connect the negative (-) battery cable and start the engine and check for exhaust or vacuum leaks.

REAR MANIFOLD
  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the manifold-to-crossover bolts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the manifold bolts then remove the manifold.
  6.  
  7. Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the manifold bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm) and the manifold to crossover bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
