  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the distributor cap and lay aside.
  4.
  5. Remove the two prong connector from the ignition module. Refer to the "Pick-up Coil Testing" illustrations in this section for connector locations.
  6.
  7. Using an ohmmeter, follow the procedures below to test the pick-up coil.
  8.
    1. Using ohms X 1, connect the test leads as shown for test 1 of illustration. The reading should read infinite at all times. If not, replace the pick-up coil.
    2.
    3. Using ohms X 1,000, connect the test leads as shown for test 2 of illustration. The reading should be between 500-1,500 omega . If not, replace the pick-up coil.
    4.

If the center distributor shaft is hitting the pick-up coil as the shaft is turned. This will ground the pick-up coil and give you a false reading. Check the distributor shaft for excessive movement, replace distributor if defective. Check the pick-up coil mounting for looseness and repair if condition occurs.

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the distributor assembly as outlined in the Distributor removal and installation procedures in this section.
  4.

Mark the position of the rotor and distributor base before pulling out the distributor. This is very important because it will save a lot of time when reinstalling. If problems occur, refer to Distributor Installation When the Engine is Disturbed procedures in this section.

  1. Place the distributor assembly into a vise. Be careful not damage the aluminum distributor housing.
  2.
  3. Mark the gear assembly at the end of the distributor housing for proper installation. Drive the roll pin out with a round punch and remove the gear.
  4.
  5. Remove the distributor shaft by pulling and twisting the rotor mounting plate.
  6.
  7. Remove the C-washer retaining ring, the three pick-up coil retaining screws, disconnect the module connector and remove the pick-up coil.
  8.

To install:

  1. Install the pick-up coil and tighten the attaching screws.
  2.
  3. Connect the coil connector to the module.
  4.
  5. Coat the distributor shaft with clean engine oil and install the shaft into the housing.
  6.
  7. Make sure the coil is mounted properly and does not hit the shaft teeth.
  8.
  9. Install the shaft gear and roll pin to the same position before disassembly.
  10.
  11. Install the distributor assembly in the engine as outlined in the Distributor removal and installation procedures in this section.
  12.
  13. Adjust the ignition timing with an inductive timing light to the proper specifications on the emissions sticker under the engine cover. Refer to the Ignition Timing Marks illustration in .
  14.

1985-88 MODELS

The distributor assembly does NOT have to be removed to replace the pick-up coil for the 1985-88 HEI distributors. Early 1985 models still may have the old style distributor and will have to be removed. Refer to the illustrations to see which style you have.

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the distributor cap by turning the two or four retaining latches counterclockwise. Move the distributor cap out of the way. Use a piece of string to hold it in place. Remove the rotor assembly.
  4.
  5. Remove the pick-up coil retaining clip by prying off with a small punch or equivalent. Be careful not to loose the clip as it comes off.
  6.
  7. Disconnect the coil electrical connector from the module and lift the pick-up coil assembly straight up to remove from the distributor.
  8.
