  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the two steering wheel pad screws from the back of the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the horn wire and remove the steering wheel pad.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering shaft nut and retainer. Using a steering wheel puller part No. J-1859-03 or equivalent, remove the steering wheel assembly.
  8.  
  9. Make sure the multi-function switch lever is in the OFF position.
  10.  
  11. Pull the lever straight out of the turn signal switch.
  12.  
  13. If equipped with cruise control, attach a mechanics wire or tool No. BT-6810 to the connector and pull the harness through the column.
  14.  
  15. Remove the steering column covers.
  16.  
  17. Remove the steering shaft retaining ring and remove the shaft lock cover, shaft lock, canceling cam assembly and spring. Refer to the illustration in this section.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the multi-function switch wire connector and remove the wire protector from the column.
  20.  
  21. Remove the three switch-to-column retaining screws.
  22.  
  23. Remove the switch by pulling the assembly out of the column cover guiding the wiring harness through the opening in the cover.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Wrap the wiring harness connector with electrical tape to prevent damage.
  2.  
  3. Thread the multi-switch wiring harness through the column cover using a stiff piece of coat hanger. Be careful not to damage the wiring harness.
  4.  
  5. Locate the switch into the cover and install the three retaining screws.
  6.  
  7. Remove the electrical tape, connect the wiring harness and install the wire protector.
  8.  
  9. Install the lower steering column covers.
  10.  
  11. Install the spring, canceling cam assembly, shaft lock, retaining ring and shaft lock cover in that order to the steering shaft.
  12.  
  13. Align the steering wheel with the mark on the shaft and install the nut. Torque the nut to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm). Install the shaft retainer.
  14.  
  15. Connect the horn wire and install the pad onto the wheel. Tighten the two horn pad retaining screws.
  16.  
  17. Install the multi-function switch lever by connecting the cruise control wiring harness, if so equipped. Push the lever into the switch.
