  1. Remove the reverse inhibitor fitting spring and washer from the end of housing.
  2.  
  3. Position the shifter shaft in the 2nd gear.
  4.  
  5. Measure the dimension A (end of housing to shoulder just behind the end of the shaft).
  6.  
  7. Apply a load of 4-6 Kg on the opposite end of the shaft. Then measure dimension B (end of housing to end of shifter shaft major diameter).
  8.  
  9. Subtract: dimension A minus dimension B equals distance C.
  10.  
  11. Compare result of step 5 with the chart and choose the proper shim for use on reinstallation.

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Place the transaxle in first gear.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the shift cable attaching nuts (E) at the transaxle levers (D) and (F) shown in the "Cable Adjustment" illustration.

  7. Remove the console and trim plates as required for access to shifter assembly.
  8.  
  9. With the shifter lever in first gear position (pulled to left and held against the stop), insert an alignment pin H and G as shown in view C.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lash from the transaxle by rotating lever D in the direction of the arrow while tightening the nut E in view (A). Levers D and F should be kept from moving during this process. Tighten nut E and F. Again levers D and F must remain stationary. Nut E on levers D and F tightened to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).

  13. Ensure reverse inhibit cam is against the roller and align if necessary.

  15. Remove the alignment pins H and G at the shifter assembly.

  17. Replace the console trim plate.
  18.  
  19. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
