  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable and drain transaxle fluid.
  2.  
  3. Mark the engine compartment lid hinges for proper installation alignment.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine compartment lid with an assistant.
  6.  
  7. Remove the side louvered panels.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear upper engine support bolt.
  10.  
  11. Install the engine support fixture part No. J-28467-A.
  12.  
  13. Raise the vehicle and support with jackstands.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the slave cylinder from the clutch but do not disconnect the hydraulic line.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the ground cable at the transaxle.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the shift cable at the transaxle.
  20.  
  21. Remove the EGR valve output pipe from the exhaust manifold.
  22.  
  23. Remove the rear wheels and tires.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the calipers and body.
  26.  
  27. Remove the lateral control arm and fixed adjusting link through bolts.
  28.  
  29. Remove the trailing arms.
  30.  
  31. Remove the halfshafts from transaxle. Refer to the "Halfshaft" procedures in this section.
  32.  
  33. Remove the rubber skirts from the splash shield cradle retainers.
  34.  
  35. Remove the rear transaxle bracket mount bolts.
  36.  
  37. Remove the engine mount-to-cradle nuts.
  38.  
  39. Remove the motor mount nuts from the cradle and front engine mount shock.
  40.  
  41. Remove the heat shield from the catalytic converter.
  42.  
  43. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold.
  44.  
  45. Remove cradle bolts and cradle from engine and support cradle on an adjustable stand.
  46.  
  47. Remove the oxygen sensor wire connector.
  48.  
  49. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe.
  50.  
  51. Remove the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts.
  52.  
  53. Remove the starter and inspection cover shields and remove the starter.
  54.  
  55. Remove the lower engine bolt studs and coolant pipe from the stud and nut.
  56.  
  57. Remove the transaxle assembly with the adjustable stand.
  58.  

To install:

  1. Hoist the transaxle into position.
  2.  

Lower the cradle at the front and raise the car. Work the cradle at the rear into position on the mounts, then raise the front into position.

  1. Position the clutch inspection cover on the starter motor.
  2.  
  3. Install the transaxle-to-engine upper bolts and torque to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Remove the transaxle jackstand.
  6.  
  7. Install all wiring harnesses and the coolant pipe on the transaxle stud.
  8.  
  9. Install the clutch inspection cover plate.
  10.  
  11. Install the halfshafts as outlined in the "Halfshaft" procedures in this section.
  12.  
  13. Install the four cradle bolts and torque to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the rear transaxle bracket bolts and torque to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the motor mount nuts and align mount. Torque to 42 ft. lbs. (57 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the engine shock assembly.
  20.  
  21. Install the lateral control arm, fixed adjusting link and the trailing arms.
  22.  
  23. Install or reconnect the parking brake cables.
  24.  
  25. Install the splash shield retainers and rear wheels. Torque the lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Remove the engine support fixture J-28467-A.
  28.  
  29. Install the rear engine support bolt and torque to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Install the crossover pipe, wire to the oxygen sensor and heat shields.
  32.  
  33. Install the EGR valve output pipe to exhaust manifold.
  34.  
  35. Install the clutch slave cylinder-to-transaxle and torque to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  36.  
  37. Install and reconnect the transaxle shift cables.
  38.  
  39. Refill the transaxle with the specified lubricant. Refer to the "Fluid Recommendations" in .
  40.  
  41. Reinstall the engine compartment lid with an assistant.
  42.  
  43. Install the louvered panel and reconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  44.  
  45. Recheck every step to ensure a complete reinstallation. Road test to check for proper operation.
  46.  

5-Speed 282 Muncie (MT2)
  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove the select and shift cables nuts securing the cables to the transaxle bracket.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the backup lamp switch.
  8.  
  9. Remove the shift cables and nut on the stud securing bracket to transaxle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the select cable mount.
  12.  
  13. Remove the clutch slave cylinder attaching bolts. Do not disconnect the hydraulic hose.
  14.  
  15. Remove the exhaust pipe from the manifold and crossover pipe (6-cyl).
  16.  
  17. Remove the three bolts and one stud from the upper transaxle-to-engine.
  18.  
  19. Install the engine support fixture No. J-28467-A or J-35563. Refer to the illustration in the previous procedures.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the front and rear transaxle mounts.
  22.  
  23. Raise the vehicle and support with jackstands.
  24.  
  25. Remove the four clutch inspection plate screws and the plate.
  26.  
  27. Remove the lower frame (cradle) as follows in the "Cradle (sub-frame)" procedures in this section.
  28.  
  29. Remove the halfshafts as outlined in the "Halfshaft" procedures in this section.
  30.  
  31. Remove the two nuts retaining the wire harness on the two lower studs.
  32.  
  33. Remove the two studs and transaxle from the bottom of the vehicle. The engine may have to be tilted down for clearance.
  34.  

To install:

  1. Position the transaxle through the bottom and attach the engine to the transaxle with the two studs. Do not tighten studs.
  2.  
  3. Raise the cradle as outlined in the "Cradle" procedures in this section.
  4.  
  5. Install the halfshafts as outlined in the "Halfshaft" procedures in this section.
  6.  
  7. Install the clutch inspection plate and four screws, torque to 10 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the front and rear transaxle mounts.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle and remove the engine support fixture J-28467-A or J-35563.
  12.  
  13. Install the three upper transaxle-to-engine bolts and one stud. Torque the upper and lower bolts and studs to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the wiring harnesses to the two studs and torque the nuts to 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the exhaust crossover or single pipe and torque the nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the clutch slave cylinder and torque the two attaching bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the cable mount and torque to 89 inch.lb. (10 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install the select and shift cable and torque the nuts to 89 inch.lb. (10 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the backup lamp switch and wire, torque to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Install the fluid drain plug and torque to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Refill the transaxle with syncromesh transmission fluid (12345349) or equivalent.
  30.  
  31. Recheck every operation to check for proper reinstallation. Road test to check for proper operation.
