Air Gap Inspection & Adjustment



1.6L & 2.0L Engine
  1. Loosen the CKP sensor installation bolt.
  2.  
  3. While moving the CKP sensor, adjust the air gap between the CKP sensor and the plate teeth on the plate using a feeler gauge. Air gap should be 0.020-0.059 in. (0.5-1.5 mm).
    1. If not adjusted within specification, replace the plate behind the crankshaft pulley or CKP sensor.
    2.  
    3. If not as specified, adjust the CKP sensor or inspect the plate teeth for being twisted and/or chipped.
    4.  
    5. If any of the plate teeth is twisted and/or chipped, replace the plate.

Operation



Specific to:

Mazda Protege 1999-2003

The crankshaft position sensor reads the rotation of the crankshaft, which the computer translates to determine engine-timing sequences. The computer uses this reading, in conjunction with the camshaft position sensor, to determine proper fuel injection and ignition timing.

Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Mazda Protege 1999-2003

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the necessary accessory drive belts to access the sensor.
  4.  
  5. If necessary, remove the engine oil dipstick tube.
  6.  
  7. Remove the sensor-attaching bolt, and then withdraw the sensor from the engine.
  8.  
  9. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  10.  

1.6L Engines

CAUTION
When foreign material such as an iron chip is on the CKP sensor, it can cause abnormal output from the sensor because of flux turbulence and adversely affect the engine control. Be sure there is no foreign material on the CKP sensor when replacing.

  1. Disconnect the CKP sensor connector.
  2.  
  3. Remove the undercover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the CKP sensor installation bolt.

  7. Install in the reverse order of removal.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the retaining bolt to 70-95 inch lbs. (8-10 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Reconnect the CKP sensor connector.
    CAUTION
    Do not forcefully pull the wiring harness of the CKP sensor. Doing so will break the harness.

  13. Adjust the air gap. See -AIR GAP INSPECTION & ADJUSTMENT-.

Testing



1.6L & 2.0L Engine
Circuit Open/Short Inspection

Specific to:

Mazda Protege 1998-2003

Mazda Protege5 2002-2003

  1. Remove the PCM. See -Powertrain Control Module (PCM)- in this section.
  2.  
  3. Connect the 104-Pin Breakout Box to the PCM using the PCM harness connector.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the connector attaching screw.
  6.  
  7. Inspect for an open or short circuit in the following wiring harnesses by probing the applicable sensor and 104-Pin Breakout Box) terminals with ohmmeter leads.
    1. If there is an open or short circuit, repair or replace wiring harnesses.
    2.  
    3. If there is no open or short circuit, replace the CKP sensor.
    4.

  9. To check for an open circuit, make the following connections:

    CKP signal (+) circuit (CKP sensor connector terminal A and PCM connector terminal 21)
     
    CKP signal (-) circuit (CKP sensor connector terminal B and PCM connector terminal 22)

  11. To check for a short circuit, make the following connections:

    CKP signal (+) circuit (CKP sensor connector terminal A and PCM connector 21 to GND)
     
    CKP signal (-) circuit (CKP sensor connector terminal B and PCM connector terminal 22)

  13. Reconnect the CKP sensor connector.

Resistance Inspection

Specific to:

Mazda Protege 1998-2003

Mazda Protege5 2002-2003

  1. Disconnect the CKP sensor connector.
  2.  
  3. Measure the resistance between CKP sensor terminals A and B using an ohmmeter.
    1. If not approximately 550 ohms, replace the CKP sensor.
    2.  
    3. If CKP sensor resistance is okay, but PID value or PCM terminal 21 and 22 voltage are out of specification, carry out the -Circuit Open/Short Inspection-.
