Fig. Always follow the instructions on any safety labels regarding the air bag system

The air bag system, or supplemental restraint system (SRS), is designed to provide additional protection for front seat occupants when used in conjunction with a seat belt. The system is an electronically controlled, mechanically operated system. It contains two basic subsystems: the air bag modules (the actual air bags themselves), and the electrical system.

On 1993-95 vehicles, only a driver-s side air bag is used. The system consists of:

The driver-s side air bag module

The center radiator primary crash air bag sensor and bracket

The center console primary crash/safing air bag sensor and bracket

The air bag diagnostic monitor

The air bag sliding contact

The instrument panel air bag warning indicator

On 1996-00 vehicles, both a driver-s side and a passenger-s side air bag are used. The system consists of:

The driver-s side air bag module

The passenger-s side air bag module

The air bag diagnostic monitor

The primary crash air bag sensor and the safing air bag sensor, which are part of the air bag diagnostic monitor

The air bag sliding contact

The instrument panel air bag warning indicator

When the ignition switch is in the ON or START position, the air bag sensors monitor vehicle motion. In the event of a severe front end collision, the primary crash sensor and safing sensor contacts close at the same time, completing the circuit and inflating the air bags. When not activated, the system is monitored by the air bag diagnostic monitor. System readiness is indicated by the air bag warning lamp located on the instrument panel. If a system fault is detected by the diagnostic monitor, the warning lamp will stay on or flash continuously, and the monitor will store a diagnostic trouble code.
