Nissan Quest 1993-1998
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the starter motor. Please refer to Engine Electrical, Starting System, Starter, Removal and Installation for the procedure.
- Disconnect the transaxle range (TR) switch electrical connector.
Disconnect the two electrical connectors mounted on the electrical connector brackets.
Remove the bolt from each of the electrical connector brackets.
WARNINGBe careful not to scratch or damage the sensor edge of the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor.
- On 1996-98 vehicles, remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor heat shield retaining nut and remove the shield. Disconnect the CKP sensor electrical connector. Remove the CKP sensor bolt and remove the sensor.
- Remove the transaxle dipstick.
- Remove the upper and lower mounting bolts for the transaxle dipstick tube and remove the tube.
- Remove the upper transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts.
- Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle securely on jackstands.
- Remove both halfshafts. Please refer to Halfshafts, Removal and Installation for the procedure.
- Place a drain pan under the transaxle oil pan drain.
- Loosen the drain plug with a wrench. Gently hold in on the drain plug as it is unscrewed to prevent fluid from escaping until the plug is fully removed.
- Allow the fluid to drain fully.
- Remove the catalytic converter inlet pipe-to-exhaust bracket bolt.
Remove the two exhaust bracket-to-transaxle nuts and remove the bracket.
- Remove the three rear transaxle-to-engine brace bolts.
- Remove the four front transaxle-to-engine brace bolts.
- Remove the lower transaxle-to-engine bolt.
- Remove the two exhaust system bracket-to-transaxle studs and torque converter inspection plate.
Remove the shift cable nut and shift cable from the manual shift linkage rod.
Using a screwdriver, release the shift cable locking pin from the shift cable bracket and remove the shift cable from the bracket.
- Disconnect the valve body electrical connector.
Disconnect the transaxle ground strap from the end of the transaxle case.
- Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector.
- Remove the VSS hold-down bracket bolt and remove the bracket and sensor from the transaxle.
- Disconnect the transaxle breather tube from the breather.
- Mark the torque converter and flywheel to ensure proper positioning during reassembly.
- Remove the four torque converter-to-flywheel bolts. Use a socket on the crankshaft pulley bolt to rotate the flywheel and torque converter to gain access to the bolts, and to stop the crankshaft from turning.
- Using a pair of pliers, slide the transaxle oil cooler hose clamps away from the transaxle.
- Disconnect the transaxle oil cooler hoses from the transaxle assembly and plug the hoses.
- Place a suitable transaxle jack under the transaxle and secure the transaxle to the jack.
- Remove the three rear transaxle mount nuts and the rear mount through bolt and remove the mount.
Remove the three front transaxle mount bolts and the front mount through bolt and remove the mount.
- Carefully separate the transaxle from the engine and lower the transaxle from the vehicle.
The installation is the reverse of removal, but please note the following important steps.
NOTEFlush the transaxle cooler and cooler lines thoroughly before installing the transaxle.
Before installing the transaxle, make sure that the torque converter is fully seated in the transaxle. Using a straight edge placed across the transaxle case-to-engine mating surface, measure the distance between the straight edge and the face of the torque converter bolt holes. The distance should be at least 0.55 inch (14mm) on 1993-95 vehicles. On 1996-98 vehicles, the distance should be at least 0.75 inch (19mm).
- When mounting the transaxle to the engine, make sure that the dowels are properly aligned.
- When installing the lower transaxle-to-engine bolt, tighten it to 22-30 ft. lbs. (30-40 Nm).
- When installing the rear transaxle mount, tighten the nuts and the through bolt to 32-41 ft. lbs. (43-55 Nm).
- When installing the front transaxle mount, tighten the bolts to 30-38 ft. lbs. (41-52 Nm). Tighten the through bolt to 47-54 ft. lbs. (64-74 Nm).
- When installing the torque converter-to-flywheel bolts, tighten them to 33-43 ft. lbs. (44-59 Nm).
- When installing the shift cable, tighten the nut to 8.7-10.8 ft. lbs. (11.8-14.7 Nm).
- When installing the rear transaxle-to-engine brace bolts, tighten them to 22-30 ft. lbs. (30-40 Nm).
- When installing the front transaxle-to-engine brace bolts, tighten them to 22-30 ft. lbs. (30-40 Nm).
- When installing the exhaust bracket to the transaxle, tighten the bolts to 22-30 ft. lbs. (30-40 Nm).
- When installing the catalytic converter inlet pipe-to-exhaust bracket bolt, tighten it to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
- When installing the upper transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts, tighten them to 29-36 ft. lbs. (39-49 Nm).
- When installing the transaxle dipstick tube, tighten the bolts to 36-44 inch lbs. (4-5 Nm).
- Fill the transaxle with the proper fluid to the required level. Please refer to General Information and Maintenance, Fluids and Lubricants, Automatic Transaxle, Level Check for the procedure.
- Check for leaks.
- Road test the vehicle to check the transaxle for proper operation.
