Power Transistor

Print

Specific to:

Mercury Villager 1993-2000

Nissan Quest 1993-2000

The power transistor is located between the ignition coil and the distributor on 1993-98 3.0L engine models. On 1999-00 3.3L engine models, the power transistor is located inside of the distributor, and cannot be replaced separately.

Removal & Installation

3.0L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the power transistor harness connector.
  4.
  5. Remove the power transistor bracket mounting bolt.
  6.
  7. Remove the power transistor with the bracket attached.
  8.
  9. Remove the two bolts that secure the power transistor to the bracket.
  10.
  11. The installation is the reverse of removal.
  12.

Testing

The use of a digital volt ohmmeter (DVOM) is required for the following power transistor tests. If using a DVOM with a diode or transistor test function, follow the meter manufacturer-s instructions for testing transistors.

NOTE
The following tests only check for an internally shorted transistor and will not detect if the transistor is open or weak.

3.0L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the power transistor harness connector.
  4.
  5. Connect the digital ohmmeter positive lead to terminal a of the transistor. Connect the negative lead to terminal b . If the resistance is less than 10,000 (10k) ohms, replace the transistor.
