Adjustment

Specific to:

Mercury Villager 1993-2000

Nissan Quest 1993-2000

Proper belt adjustment is crucial to the life of the belt and to the operation of the component that the belt drives. A belt that is too loose will be noisy, become glazed, and may affect component operation. A belt that is too tight will place excessive loads on component bearings, causing bearing failure. If accurate measurement is not possible, it is better for the belt to be slightly loose rather than too tight. Belt adjustment can be checked by measuring either belt tension or belt deflection.

Belt tension measurement requires the use of a belt tension gauge, such as Rotunda (Ford) special tool 014-R1066, or its equivalent. On both engines, tension measurement is made at the topmost horizontal run of the belt at the midpoint between the pulleys (See drive belt routing chart).

While not as accurate, belt deflection is also an acceptable means of measuring belt adjustment. Deflection can be measured by applying 22 lbs. (98 N) of pressure on the top surface of the belt at the same point that belt tension is checked, and measuring the amount of movement with a ruler.

The manufacturer recommends that drive belts should be inspected for wear and adjustment initially at 60,000 miles (96,000 km ) or 48 months, whichever comes first. Thereafter, belts should be inspected every 15,000 miles (24,000 km) or 12 months, whichever comes first.

NOTE
According to the manufacturer, drive belt adjustment should be checked cold, or after the engine has been off for at least thirty minutes. Belts are considered new if they have been on a running engine less than five minutes. Please refer to the chart for belt tension and deflection specifications.

Inspection

Specific to:

Mercury Villager 1993-2000

Nissan Quest 1993-2000

Inspect the belts for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately. It is best to replace all drive belts at one time, as a preventive maintenance measure, during this service operation.

Removal & Installation

Specific to:

Mercury Villager 1993-2000

Nissan Quest 1993-2000

Always replace drive belts with the same type and size of belt. When replacing belts, inspect the pulleys for damage, wear, or warpage. Replace damaged pulleys before installing belts. If a belt is to be reused, mark the direction of travel on the belt with a felt marker or crayon to ensure proper installation. Be sure to use the proper adjustment specifications, whether installing a new or used belt.
