Oil Pump

Inspection

Specific to:

Mercury Villager 1993-2000

Nissan Quest 1993-2000

NOTE
The oil pump is responsible for providing constant lubrication to the whole engine and so it is recommended that a new oil pump be installed when rebuilding the engine.

Completely disassemble the oil pump and thoroughly clean all of the components. Inspect the oil pump gears and housing for wear and/or damage. Insure that the pressure relief valve operates properly and there is no binding or sticking due to varnish or debris. If all of the parts are in proper working condition, lubricate the gears and relief valve, and assemble the pump.

Removal & Installation

Specific to:

Mercury Villager 1993-2000

Nissan Quest 1993-2000

  1. Remove the oil pan.
  2.
  3. Support the engine by installing the transverse member.
    1. Install the transverse member. Tighten the bolts to 58-65 ft. lbs. (78-88 Nm).
    2.
    3. Install the engine mount through bolts and tighten them to 58-65 ft. lbs. (78-88 Nm).
    4.

  4.
  5. Remove the timing belt.
  6.
  7. Remove the crankshaft sprocket and the inner timing belt guide.
  8.
  9. Remove the timing belt tensioner nut. Remove the tensioner and spring.
  10.
  11. Remove the alternator mounting bracket-to-oil pump bolt and position the bracket out of the way.
  12.
  13. Remove the three power steering pump bolts. The pulley must be rotated to access all of the bolts.
  14.
  15. Remove the power steering pump bracket bolts, remove the bracket, and position the power steering pump aside.
  16.
  17. Disconnect the oil pressure sensor electrical connector.
  18.
  19. Remove the oil filter adapter bolts and remove the oil filter and adapter assembly. Discard the two oil filter adapter O-rings.
    NOTE
The oil filter adapter and the pick-up tube and screen assemblies may be removed after the oil pump is removed from the engine.

  20.
  21. Remove the two oil pump pick-up tube and screen assembly bolts and remove the assembly. Discard the oil pump pick-up tube O-rings.
  22.
  23. Remove the six oil pump bolts and remove the pump assembly from the engine. Discard the oil pump gasket.
  24.

To install:

  1. The installation is the reverse of removal, but please note the following important steps.
  2.
  3. Clean all of the oil pump and engine block sealing surfaces.
  4.
  5. Use new gaskets and seals.
  6.
  7. Replace the front crankshaft seal, using the following procedure:
    1. With the oil pump laying on a flat surface, hold the pump down and pry the crankshaft seal from the pump.
    2.
    3. Using a seal driver or large socket that matches the diameter of the outer edge of the seal, drive the seal into the oil pump.
    4.
    5. Apply a small amount of engine oil to the inner lip of the new seal before installing the oil pump.
    6.

  8.
  9. When installing the oil pump, tighten the long bolts to 9-12 ft. lbs. (12-16 Nm) and the short bolts to 38-45 inch lbs. (6-7 Nm).
  10.
  11. When installing the oil pump pick-up tube and screen assembly, tighten the bolts to 12-15 ft. lbs. (16-21 Nm) on 1993-98 3.0L engines. On 1999-00 3.3L engines, tighten the pick-up tube and screen assembly bolts to 15-20 ft. lbs. (21-26 Nm).
  12.
  13. When installing the oil filter adapter, tighten the adapter bolts to 12-15 ft. lbs. (16-21 Nm) on 1993-98 3.0L engines. On 1999-00 3.3L engines, tighten the adapter bolts to 15-20 ft. lbs. (21-26 Nm).
  14.
  15. Fill the engine with the specified engine oil to the required level.
  16.
  17. Run the engine and check for leaks.
