3.0L Engine
Left Side (Front)

Specific to:

Mercury Villager 1993-1998

Nissan Quest 1993-1998

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the ignition coil wire from the coil and remove it from the clip on the rocker arm cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the breather hose from the rocker arm cover and the breather tube that runs the length of the intake manifold.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the power transistor electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Remove the power transistor bracket-to-cylinder head bolt and remove the transistor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the distributor.
  12.  
  13. Remove the nine rocker arm cover screws.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rocker arm cover and gasket. Discard the old gasket. It may be necessary to tap the cover with a rubber mallet to break the seal with the cylinder head.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Clean the rocker arm cover and cylinder head gasket surfaces. A gasket scraper and solvent may be used, however, be careful not to nick or gouge either surface.
  2.  
  3. Attach the new gasket to the rocker arm cover.
  4.  
  5. Position the rocker arm cover on the cylinder head and install the screws.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the screws to 9-26 inch lbs. (1-3 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the distributor, power transistor, breather hose, and ignition coil wire.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Check the engine oil level. Run the engine and check for leaks.
  14.  

Right Side (Rear)

Specific to:

Mercury Villager 1993-1998

Nissan Quest 1993-1998

  1. Remove the upper intake manifold. Please refer to Intake Manifold, Removal and Installation, Upper Intake Manifold (Plenum) for the procedure.
  2.  
  3. Detach the coolant recovery tank from its bracket and set it aside.
  4.  
  5. Unbolt the air intake resonator tube, located behind the air cleaner, and remove the tube.
  6.  
  7. Remove the nine rocker arm cover screws.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rocker arm cover and gasket. Discard the old gasket. It may be necessary to tap the cover with a rubber mallet to break the seal with the cylinder head.

To install:

  9. Install the upper intake manifold, air intake resonator tube, coolant recovery tank, and air cleaner-to-intake manifold hose.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Fill the cooling system.
  14.  
  15. Check the engine oil level. Run the engine and check for leaks.
