Lower Control Arms

Bushing Replacement



Specific to:

Mercury Villager 1993-2000

Nissan Quest 1993-2000

The use of a press and special tools is required to replace the lower control arm bushings. If these tools are not available, the lower control arm can be taken to a reputable auto repair or machine shop for bushing replacement.

Front Bushings

Specific to:

Mercury Villager 1993-2000

Nissan Quest 1993-2000

  1. Remove the lower control arm from the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Position the lower control arm in the press on a suitable adapter plate with the front bushing facing up. Note the position of the bushing in the control arm.
  4.  
  5. Position the proper diameter tool on the front bushing and press the bushing from the lower control arm.

To install:

  1. With the lower control arm in the same position in the press, place the new front bushing in position on the control arm.
  2.  
  3. Position the proper diameter tool on the front bushing and press the bushing into the lower control arm.
  4.  
  5. Install the lower control arm on the vehicle.

Rear Bushings

Specific to:

Mercury Villager 1993-2000

Nissan Quest 1993-2000

  1. Remove the lower control arm from the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Position a bearing puller or similar tool between the rear bushing and the lower control arm flange.
  4.  
  5. Position the tool in the press on suitable supports with the rear bushing facing up. Note the position of the bushing on the control arm.
  6.  
  7. Position the proper diameter tool on the lower control arm and press the control arm from the bushing.

To install:

  1. Position the bearing puller or similar tool under the lower control arm flange.
  2.  
  3. Position the tool in the press on suitable supports.
  4.  
  5. Place the new rear bushing in position on the lower control arm.
  6.  
  7. Position the proper diameter tool on the bushing and press the bushing onto the lower control arm.
  8.  
  9. Install the lower control arm on the vehicle.

Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Mercury Villager 1993-1998

Nissan Quest 1993-1998


NOTE
Be sure that new ball joint-to-control arm nuts, ball joint cotter pin, stabilizer bar link-to-control arm nuts, and front lower control arm nut are available. These parts lose their torque holding/retention capabilities during removal and must not be reused.

  1. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle securely on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower ball joint. Please refer to Ball Joint, Removal and Installation for the procedure.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front stabilizer bar link-to-lower control arm nut and discard it. Separate the link from the control arm.
  8.  
  9. Remove the two lower control arm rear bracket bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the front lower control arm nut and discard it.
  12.  
  13. Pull the rear of the lower control arm down and gently pry the control arm forward and off of the lower arm gusset.

To install:

  1. The installation is the reverse of removal, but please note the following important steps.
  2.  
  3. When installing the new front lower control arm nut, tighten it to 94-116 ft. lbs. (128-157 Nm).
  4.  
  5. When installing the two lower control arm rear bracket bolts, tighten them to 87-108 ft. lbs. (118-147 Nm).
  6.  
  7. When installing the front stabilizer bar link in the lower control arm, use a new nut and tighten it to 12-16 ft. lbs. (16-22 Nm).
  8.  
  9. When installing the ball joint to the control arm, use new nuts and tighten them to 56-80 ft. lbs. (76-109 Nm).
  10.  
  11. When installing the lower ball joint in the knuckle, tighten the nut to 52-63 ft. lbs. (71-86 Nm). Continue tightening the nut until a new cotter pin can be inserted through the hole in the stud and install the new cotter pin.
  12.  
  13. When installing the lug nuts, tighten them to 72-87 ft. lbs. (98-118 Nm).
  14.  
  15. A front end alignment check is recommended.
