NOTE
Be sure that a new strut shaft nut is available. This part loses its torque holding/retention capability during removal and must not be reused.


CAUTION
Never remove the strut shaft nut until the coil spring is compressed or serious injury may occur.

  1. Place the strut and coil spring assembly in a suitable vise and remove the strut nut cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the strut shaft nut cover.
  4.  
  5. Loosen, but do not remove, the strut shaft nut.
  6.  
  7. Using an approved coil spring compressor, compress the coil spring.

  9. Remove the strut shaft nut and discard it.
  10.  
  11. Lift the front strut upper mounting bracket off of the strut.
  12.  
  13. Remove the front strut bearing and the bearing seat.
  14.  
  15. Remove the upper coil spring seat and dust boot.
  16.  
  17. Remove the coil spring, with the spring compressor still attached, from the strut.
  18.  
  19. Slowly release the tension of the coil spring compressor and remove the coil spring from the compressor.
  20.  
  21. Remove the coil spring insulator and slide the suspension bumper off of the strut.
  22.  

To install:

  1. The installation is the reverse of removal, but please note the following important steps.
  2.  
  3. When installing the coil spring, make sure that it is properly positioned in the spring seat.

  5. When installing the new strut shaft nut, tighten it to 43-58 ft. lbs. (59-78 Nm).

Removal & Installation

NOTE
Be sure that new strut upper mounting bracket nuts and strut-to-knuckle nuts are available. These parts lose their torque holding/retention capabilities during removal and must not be reused.

  1. Match mark the front strut upper mounting bracket and the chassis strut tower.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle securely on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel.
  6.  
  7. If equipped, remove the two front anti-lock brake (ABS) sensor cable bracket bolts and position the anti-lock sensor cable out of the way.

  9. Using a screwdriver, remove the brake hose U-clip from the strut and position the hose out of the way.
  10.  
  11. Support the control arm and remove the two strut-to-steering knuckle bolts and nuts and discard the nuts.

  13. Support the strut and remove the three upper mounting bracket nuts and discard them. Remove the strut from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. The installation is the reverse of removal, but please note the following important steps.
  2.  
  3. When installing the front strut upper mounting bracket, use new nuts and tighten them to 29-40 ft. lbs. (39-54 Nm).
  4.  
  5. When installing the strut-to-steering knuckle bolts, use new nuts and tighten them to 94-109 ft. lbs. (127-147 Nm).
  6.  
  7. When installing the ABS sensor cable bracket bolts, tighten them to 16-21 inch lbs. (1.8-2.4 Nm).
  8.  
  9. When installing the lug nuts, tighten them to 72-87 ft. lbs. (98-118 Nm).
