The Fast Idle Control (FIC) solenoid is used to supply additional air to the engine in order to maintain the idle speed when the A/C is on.

Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Mercury Villager 1993-1998

Nissan Quest 1993-1998

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the FIC solenoid electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Unscrew and remove the FIC solenoid from the IAC/FIC.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install a new copper washer on the FIC solenoid.
  2.  
  3. Install the solenoid in the IAC/FIC assembly.
  4.  
  5. Connect the FIC solenoid electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

Testing



Specific to:

Mercury Villager 1993-1998

Nissan Quest 1993-1998

  1. With the ignition switch OFF , disconnect the electrical connector from the FIC solenoid.
  2.  
  3. Connect the fused jumper wire between the positive battery terminal and one FIC solenoid terminal.
  4.  
  5. Connect one end of the other jumper wire to the negative battery terminal.
  6.  
  7. Connect the other end of the negative battery terminal jumper wire to the second FIC solenoid terminal. A click should be heard as the solenoid engages. If not, replace the solenoid.
  8.  
  9. Unscrew the solenoid from the IAC/FIC assembly. Inspect the plunger and spring for sticking or damage. If either is damaged, replace the solenoid.

NOTE
Two jumper wires are required for the following tests. An in-line fuse holder with a 30 amp fuse should be spliced in the jumper wire that will be connected to the positive battery terminal to prevent possible damage to the battery, wiring, and components of the circuit being tested.
