  1. Disconnect the battery cables, negative cable first.
  2.  
  3. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core at the bulkhead.
  6.  
  7. Remove the four screws from the center console compartment and remove the compartment.

  9. Remove the two screws from both the driver-s side and passenger-s side lower instrument panel center covers and remove the covers.
  10.  
  11. Remove the screw from the center instrument panel bezel. Pull the bezel evenly away from the instrument panel to release the clips, being careful not to damage the bezel, and remove it.
  12.  
  13. Remove the four ashtray screws. Slide the ashtray out, disconnect the electrical connector from the lighter, and remove the ashtray.
  14.  
  15. Remove the four radio bracket screws. Slide the radio out, disconnect the electrical and antenna connections, and remove the radio and bracket assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the four climate control assembly screws. Slide the control assembly out, disconnect the five electrical connectors, and remove the control assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove the two heater outlet floor duct screws and remove the duct.
  20.  
  21. Remove the plastic clip and four screws from the passenger-s side lower instrument panel cover and remove the cover.
  22.  
  23. Remove the four passenger-s side instrument panel lower reinforcement bolts and remove the reinforcement.
  24.  
  25. Remove the plastic clip and four screws from the driver-s side lower instrument panel cover and remove the cover.
  26.  
  27. Remove the four driver-s side instrument panel lower reinforcement bolts and remove the reinforcement.
  28.  
  29. Using a screwdriver, pry back the metal retainer on the anti-lock brake control module electrical harness connector and disconnect the connector and position the harness aside.

  31. Disconnect the remaining electrical connectors from the anti-lock brake control module and position them aside.

  33. Remove the three anti-lock brake control module screws and remove the module.
  34.  
  35. If the vehicle is equipped with cruise control, disconnect the cruise control amplifier electrical connector.

  37. Remove the three cruise control amplifier screws and remove the amplifier.

  39. Remove the three electronic door lock control processor nuts.

  41. Disconnect the electronic door lock control processor electrical connector and remove the processor.
    CAUTION
    Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column, and instrument panel, disable the SRS.

  43. Remove the center console primary crash/safing air bag sensor screws.

  45. Disconnect the center console primary crash/safing air bag sensor electrical connectors and remove the sensor assembly.

  47. Remove the two center duct screws and remove the duct.

  49. Remove the two ground wire bolts.
  50.  
  51. Remove the three U-bracket-to-chassis nuts.

  55. Remove the two bolts from both the driver-s side and passenger-s side instrument panel brackets and remove the brackets.

  57. Open the glove compartment door. Remove the two glove compartment screws, separate the glove compartment from the instrument panel, disconnect the electrical connector, and remove the glove compartment.
  58.  
  59. Remove the passenger-s side inner and outer ducts.
  60.  
  61. Remove the driver-s side inner duct.
  62.  
  63. Remove the two accelerator pedal and shaft assembly bolts and remove the assembly.
  64.  
  65. Remove the accelerator pedal stop screw and remove the stop.
  66.  
  67. Remove the heater outlet duct screw and remove the duct.

  69. Remove the three temperature blend/panel bypass door actuator motor bracket bolts.

  71. Disconnect the temperature blend/panel bypass door actuator motor electrical connector and remove the motor and bracket assembly.

  73. Remove the three panel/floor/defrost door actuator motor bolts.
  74.  
  75. Disconnect the panel/floor/defrost door actuator motor electrical connector.

  77. Disengage the control rod from the panel/floor/defrost door actuator motor and remove the motor and bracket assembly.

  79. Remove the three A/C evaporator register duct screws and remove the duct.
  80.  
  81. Remove the four A/C evaporator and blower motor assembly screws to allow the heater assembly to be removed. DO NOT remove the A/C evaporator and blower motor assembly.

  83. Remove the four heater assembly screws and remove the assembly.
  84.  
  85. Place the heater assembly on a workbench or other suitable working surface.
  86.  
  87. Remove the two screws from the heater pipe plate and remove the plate.
  88.  
  89. Remove the heater core retainer.

  91. Disengage the heater water control valve control rod and remove the heater core from the heater assembly.

To install:

  1. The installation is the reverse of removal, but please note the following important steps.
  2.  
  3. When installing the accelerator pedal and shaft assembly, tighten the bolts to 27-34 inch lbs. (3-4 Nm).
  4.  
  5. When installing the U-bracket, tighten the bolts to 29-39 inch lbs. (3.2-4.4 Nm).
  6.  
  7. When installing the U-bracket-to-chassis nuts, tighten them to 71-97 inch lbs. (8-11 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  10.  
  11. Run the engine and check for leaks.
  12.  
  13. Check the heater system for proper operation.
  14.

  1. Disconnect the battery cables, negative cable first.
  2.  
  3. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core at the bulkhead.
  6.  
  7. Remove the four lower center console cover screws or clips and remove the cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the plastic clip from the side of the glove compartment assembly. Remove the two lower screws, two center bolts, two upper screws, and the screw at the instrument panel bracket. Separate the glove compartment from the instrument panel, disconnect the electrical connector from the latch, and remove the glove compartment.
  10.  
  11. Remove the two screws and plastic nut from both the driver-s side and passenger-s side lower instrument panel center covers and remove the covers.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the foot lamp electrical connectors.
  14.  
  15. Slide the ashtray out. Depress the retainer and remove the ashtray.
  16.  
  17. Remove the two upper and two lower screws from the center instrument panel bezel. Pull the bezel evenly away from the instrument panel to release the clips, being careful not to damage the bezel. Disconnect the lighter and lighter lamp electrical connectors and remove the bezel.
  18.  
  19. Remove the four climate control assembly screws. Slide the control assembly out, disconnect the three electrical connectors, and remove the control assembly.
  20.  
  21. Remove the four radio bracket screws. Slide the radio out, disconnect the electrical and antenna connections, and remove the radio and bracket assembly.
  22.  
  23. If equipped with a CD changer, remove the four CD changer bracket screws. Slide the CD changer out, disconnect the electrical connector, and remove the changer.
  24.  
  25. Remove the two heater outlet floor duct screws and remove the duct.
  26.  
  27. Remove the four passenger-s side instrument panel lower reinforcement bolts and remove the reinforcement.
  28.  
  29. Remove the four driver-s side instrument panel lower reinforcement bolts and remove the reinforcement.
  30.  
  31. Remove the three electronic door lock timer module screws.

  33. Disconnect the electronic door lock timer module electrical connector and remove the module.
  34.  
  35. Using a screwdriver, pry back the metal retainer on the anti-lock brake control module electrical harness connector and disconnect the connector and position the harness aside.
  36.  
  37. Disconnect the remaining electrical connectors from the anti-lock brake control module and position them aside.
  38.  
  39. Remove the three anti-lock brake control module screws and remove the module.
  40.  
  41. If the vehicle is equipped with cruise control, disconnect the cruise control amplifier electrical connector.
  42.  
  43. Remove the two cruise control amplifier bolts and remove the amplifier.
    CAUTION
    Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column, and instrument panel, disable the SRS.

  44.  
  45. Using a tamper-resistant Torx® T-50 bit, remove the four air bag diagnostic monitor bolts.
  46.  
  47. Disconnect the air bag diagnostic monitor electrical connector and remove the diagnostic monitor.
  48.  
  49. Remove the two center duct screws and remove the duct.

  51. Remove the two ground wire bolts.

  53. Remove the three U-bracket-to-chassis nuts.

  55. Remove the four U-bracket bolts and remove the bracket.

  57. Remove the two bolts from both the driver-s side and passenger-s side instrument panel brackets and remove the brackets.

  59. Remove the passenger-s side inner duct.
  60.  
  61. Remove the driver-s side inner duct.

  63. Remove the two accelerator pedal and shaft assembly bolts and remove the assembly.

  65. Remove the accelerator pedal stop screw and remove the stop.
  66.  
  67. Remove the heater outlet duct screw and remove the duct.
  68.  
  69. Remove the three temperature blend/panel bypass door actuator motor bracket bolts.
  70.  
  71. Disconnect the temperature blend/panel bypass door actuator motor electrical connector and remove the motor and bracket assembly.
  72.  
  73. Remove the three panel/floor/defrost door actuator motor bolts.
  74.  
  75. Disconnect the panel/floor/defrost door actuator motor electrical connector.
  76.  
  77. Disengage the control rod from the panel/floor/defrost door actuator motor and remove the motor and bracket assembly.
  78.  
  79. Remove the three A/C evaporator register duct screws and remove the duct.
  80.  
  81. Remove the four A/C evaporator and blower motor assembly screws to allow the heater assembly to be removed. DO NOT remove the A/C evaporator and blower motor assembly.
  82.  
  83. Remove the four heater assembly screws and remove the assembly.
  84.  
  85. Place the heater assembly on a workbench or other suitable working surface.
  86.  
  87. Remove the two screws from the heater pipe plate and remove the plate.
  88.  
  89. Remove the heater core retainer and remove the heater core from the heater assembly.
  90.  

To install:

  1. The installation is the reverse of removal, but please note the following important steps.
  2.  
  3. When installing the accelerator pedal and shaft assembly, tighten the bolts to 27-34 inch lbs. (3-4 Nm).
  4.  
  5. When installing the U-bracket, tighten the bolts to 29-39 inch lbs. (3.2-4.4 Nm).
  6.  
  7. When installing the U-bracket-to-chassis nuts, tighten them to 71-97 inch lbs. (8-11 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  10.  
  11. Run the engine and check for leaks.
  12.  
  13. Check the heater system for proper operation.

On 1993-98 vehicles, the rear heater core is removed as follows:


NOTE
If your vehicle is equipped with air conditioning, refer to the information regarding the implications of servicing your A/C system yourself. Only a MVAC-trained, EPA-certified, automotive technician should service the A/C system or its components.

  1. Have the A/C system evacuated by a qualified technician using a recovery/recycling station.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Remove the driver-s side interior rear quarter panel. Please refer to Body and Trim, Interior, Rear Quarter Panels, Removal and Installation for the procedure.
  8.  
  9. Remove the six rear A/C outlet duct screws and remove the duct from the rear A/C and heater assembly.

  11. Disconnect the rear blower motor and blower motor resistor electrical connectors.

  13. Disconnect the rear temperature blend door motor and vent door motor electrical connectors.

  15. Raise and safely support the rear of the vehicle securely on jackstands.
  16.  
  17. Using special tools designed for spring lock couplings, disconnect the two A/C lines from under the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Loosen the rear heater hose clamps and remove the hoses from the rear heater core.
  20.  
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Remove the four rear A/C and heater assembly bolts and remove the assembly from the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Place the rear A/C and heater assembly on a workbench or other suitable working surface.
  26.  
  27. Remove the four rear temperature blend door motor bolts and remove the motor from the rear A/C and heater assembly.
  28.  
  29. Remove the four rear vent door motor bolts and remove the motor from the rear A/C and heater assembly.
  30.  
  31. Remove the three lower duct screws and remove the duct from the rear A/C and heater assembly.
  32.  
  33. Remove the heater unit duct screw and remove the duct from the rear A/C and heater assembly.

  35. Remove the twenty five rear A/C and heater assembly case screws and separate the case.

  37. Remove the heater core from the case.
