Removal & Installation




CAUTION
Some models covered by this manual may be equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column, and instrument panel, disable the SRS.

  1. Disconnect the battery cables, negative cable first.
  2.  
  3. Remove the four screws from the center console compartment and remove the compartment.
  4.  
  5. Remove the two screws from both the driver-s side and passenger-s side lower instrument panel center covers and remove the covers.
  6.  
  7. Remove the plastic clip and four screws from the passenger-s side lower instrument panel cover and remove the cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the plastic clip and four screws from the driver-s side lower instrument panel cover and remove the cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the four driver-s side instrument panel lower reinforcement bolts and remove the reinforcement.
  12.  
  13. Remove the passenger-s side inner duct screw.
  14.  
  15. Remove both the driver-s side and passenger-s side lower instrument panel screws.
  16.  
  17. Open the glove compartment door. Remove the two glove compartment screws, separate the glove compartment from the instrument panel, disconnect the electrical connector, and remove the glove compartment.
  18.  
  19. Remove the heater outlet duct screw and remove the duct.
  20.  
  21. Remove the upper steering column shroud.
  22.  
  23. Remove the ignition lock cylinder. Please refer to Suspension and Steering, Steering, Ignition Lock Cylinder, Removal and Installation for the procedure.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the transaxle control switch electrical connector.
  26.  
  27. Remove the gearshift lever dust boot.
  28.  
  29. Using a small drift or similar tool place under the gearshift lever pin, drive the pin from the shift tube.
  30.  
  31. Remove the gearshift lever.
  32.  
  33. Disconnect the gearshift indicator.
  34.  
  35. Remove the gearshift indicator screw and remove the indicator.
  36.  
  37. Disconnect the shift lock actuator electrical connector.
  38.  
  39. Remove the transaxle shift cable from the lever arm and support.
  40.  
  41. Remove the two multi-function switch screws. Position the switch aside.
  42.  
  43. Disconnect the overdrive (O/D) switch electrical connector.
  44.  
  45. Remove the ignition switch electrical connector bolt and disconnect the connector.
  46.  
  47. Remove the lower steering column clamp bolt.
  48.  
  49. While supporting the steering column, remove the four steering column nuts and remove the steering column from the vehicle.
  50.  
  51. Remove the instrument cluster. Please refer to Chassis Electrical, Instruments and Switches, Instrument Cluster, Removal and Installation for the procedure.
  52.  
  53. Disconnect the seat belt warning chime electrical connector. Remove the two warning chime screws and remove the chime.
  54.  
  55. If equipped with power outside rear view mirrors, gently pry the control from the instrument panel. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the control.
  56.  
  57. Remove the screw from the center instrument panel bezel. Pull the bezel evenly away from the instrument panel to release the clips, being careful not to damage the bezel, and remove it.
  58.  
  59. Remove the four ashtray screws. Slide the ashtray out, disconnect the electrical connector from the lighter, and remove the ashtray.
  60.  
  61. Remove the four climate control assembly screws. Slide the control assembly out, disconnect the five electrical connectors, and remove the control assembly.
  62.  
  63. Remove the four radio bracket screws. Slide the radio out, disconnect the electrical and antenna connections, and remove the radio and bracket assembly.
  64.  
  65. Remove the interior windshield side moldings. Pull out from the top of the moldings and slide them up to remove them.
  66.  
  67. Remove the upper instrument panel molding.
  68.  
  69. If equipped with a light sensor, remove it from the top right side of the instrument panel, disconnect the electrical connector, and remove it.
  70.  
  71. If equipped with a headlamp dimmer sensor, remove the dimmer control module screws, disconnect the electrical connectors, and remove the module.
  72.  
  73. Remove the center instrument panel nut.
  74.  
  75. Remove the two upper instrument panel bolts and remove the panel from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. The installation is the reverse of removal.
