Removal & Installation




NOTE
Be sure that a new leaf spring front nut is available. This part loses its torque holding/retention capability during removal and must not be reused.

  1. Raise and safely support the rear of the vehicle securely on jackstands. Position the jackstands on the frame directly in front of the leaf spring front mount. Please refer to the graphic in General Information and Maintenance, Jacking for the underside view of floorjack and jackstand points.

  3. Using a floor jack, raise the rear axle housing until the tension on the leaf spring is relieved.
  4.  
  5. Remove the four leaf spring U-bolt nuts and washers.
  6.  
  7. Remove the two U-bolts, upper spring pad, and upper spring seat.
  8.  
  9. Remove the two leaf spring rear shackle nuts. Remove the shackle end plate and the shackle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear leaf spring front nut and discard it. Remove the leaf spring front bolt.
  12.  
  13. Raise or lower the rear axle housing as needed to easily remove the spring. Remove the rear leaf spring from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Position the front of the leaf spring between the front mounting plates.
    NOTE
    When installing the left rear leaf spring, install the rear spring front bolt with the head of the bolt on the mounting plate marked INNER, and the threaded end of the bolt on the mounting plate marked OUTER. When installing the right rear leaf spring, install the rear spring front bolt with the head of the bolt on the mounting plate marked OUTER, and the threaded end of the bolt on the mounting plate marked INNER.

  3. Install the leaf spring front bolt, but do not install the nut.
  4.  
  5. Position the rear end of the leaf spring below the chassis bushing and slide the spring shackle through the chassis bushing and rear spring.
  6.  
  7. Align the leaf spring alignment bolt over the pilot hole is over the axle pad. Carefully raise the rear axle until the alignment bolt enters the pilot hole in the axle pad.
  8.  
  9. Install the shackle end plate. Install the shackle nuts and tighten them to 37-50 ft. lbs. (50-68 Nm) on 1993-95 vehicles. On 1996-98 vehicles, tighten them to 43-55 ft. lbs. (58-75 Nm). On 1999-00 vehicles, tighten the shackle nuts to 66-77 ft. lbs. (90-105 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the new leaf spring front nut and tighten it to 37-50 ft. lbs. (50-68 Nm) on 1993-95 vehicles. On 1996-98 vehicles, tighten them to 43-55 ft. lbs. (58-75 Nm). On 1999-00 vehicles, tighten the front nut to 66-77 ft. lbs. (90-105 Nm).

  13. Install the two U-bolts, upper spring pad, and upper spring seat.
  14.  
  15. Install the four U-bolt washers and nuts. Tighten the nuts to 53-71 ft. lbs. (72-97 Nm) on 1993-98 vehicles. On 1999-00 vehicles, tighten them to 59-73 ft. lbs. (79-99 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Remove the jack from the rear axle housing.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle.
