Inspection

Specific to:

Lexus RX300 1999-2003

Lexus RX330 2004-2006

Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately.

NOTE
There are two ways to inspect the belt tension: the Belt Tension Gauge Method and the Deflection Method. Both are outlined below.

Belt Tension Gauge Method

  1. Attach a suitable belt tension gauge to the belt where shown in the accompanying illustration, and measure the tension of the belt. Follow the manufacture's instructions. If the belt is worn or damaged, replace it.
  2.
  3. For the A/C compressor-alternator belt, the tension should be:
    1. Used Belt: 66-110 lbs. (294-490 N)
    2.
    3. New Belt: 139-192 lbs. (617-853 N)
    4.

  4.
  5. For the power steering (vane) pump belt, the tension should be:
    1. Used Belt: 73-117 lbs. (323-513 N)
    2.
    3. New Belt: 146-190 lbs. (647-843 N)
    4.

  6.
  7. If you installed a new belt, run the engine for 5 minutes, then readjust the belt to the used belt specifications.

  8.

Deflection Method

  1. Apply a force of 22 lbs. (98 N) and measure the deflection between the points shown in the accompanying figure.
  2.
  3. For the A/C compressor-alternator belt, the deflection should be:
    1. Used Belt: 0.43-0.53 in. (11.0-13.5mm)
    2.
    3. New Belt: 0.36-0.41 in. (9.1-10.5mm)
    4.

  4.
  5. For the power steering (vane) pump belt, the deflection should be:
    1. Used Belt: 0.39-0.47 in. (10.0-12.0mm)
    2.
    3. New Belt: 0.28-0.35 in. (7.0-9.0mm)
    4.

  6.
  7. If you installed a new belt, run the engine for 5 minutes, then readjust the belt to the used belt specifications.
  8.

Removal & Installation
