Specific to:

Lexus RX300 1999-2003

  1. Install 2 nuts and a bolt to the bracket at the lower side of the shock absorber and secure it in a vise.
  2.

  3. Using SST, compress the coil spring. SST 09727-30021
  4.  
  5. Using SST to hold the spring upper seat, remove the nut.
  6.

  7. Remove the suspension support.
  8.  
  9. Remove the ball bearing.
  10.  
  11. Remove the spring upper seat.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper insulator.
  14.  
  15. Remove the coil spring.
  16.  
  17. Remove the springRemove the lower insulator.
  18.  

To assemble:

  1. Install the coil spring to the shock absorber. Fit the lower end of the coil spring into the gap of the spring lower seat.

  3. Install the upper insulator.
  4.  
  5. Install the spring upper seat to the shock absorber with the mark facing to the outside of the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Install the ball bearing.
  8.  
  9. Install the suspension support with the mark facing to the outside of the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Using SST to hold the spring upper seat, install a new nut. Torque to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Remove the SST from the coil spring.
  14.  

Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
    NOTE
    Do not support the weight of the vehicle on the suspension arm; the arm will deform under its weight.

  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Brake hose and the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor wire from the strut
     
    Sway bar link from the strut
     

  4.  
  5. Remove the reservoir tank.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Strut lower end from the steering knuckle lower arm
     
    3 upper strut mounting plate-to-upper wheel arch nuts
     
    Strut
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Align the upper suspension support hole with the strut piston or end, so they fit properly.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Tighten the 3 suspension support-to-wheel arch nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
     
    Tighten the strut-to-steering knuckle arm bolts to 155 ft. lbs. (210 Nm).
     
    Sway bar link to the strut. Tighten the nut to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    ABS speed sensor and the brake hose to the strut, if equipped
     
    Install the reservoir tank.
     
    Install the wheel
     

  4.  
  5. Check and/or adjust the front wheel alignment.
  6.
