Front Halfshafts



2-wheel drive

Specific to:

Lexus RX300 1999-2003

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transaxle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Have an assistant depress the brake pedal and loosen the bearing locknut.



    Front wheels
     
    Cotter pin and locknut cap
     



    Engine undercover
     
    Fender apron seal
     
    ABS speed sensor
     
    Tie rod end, from the steering knuckle
     
    Steering knuckle, from the lower control arm
     
    Matchmark the inboard and outboard shafts and remove the 6 bolts. Have an assistant depress the brake pedal.
     
    Halfshaft from the axle hub, using a plastic hammer
     
    Cover the outer boot with a rag
     
    Halfshaft from the transaxle, using the proper tools

To install:

  1. Reverse the removal procedures to complete installation, tightening fasteners to: halfshaft nut, 217 ft. lbs. (294 Nm); the 6 bolts, 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm); tie rod end nut, 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Fill the transaxle with gear oil, install the fender apron, check front end alignment and test drive.
    NOTE
    If the cotter pin holes do not align, always correct by tightening the nut until the next hole aligns.

  5. Install a new cotter pin.
  6.  

4-wheel drive

Specific to:

Lexus RX300 1999-2003


NOTE
The hub bearing could be damaged if it is subjected to the vehicle weight, such as when moving the vehicle with the drive shaft removed. Therefore, if it is absolutely necessary to place the vehicle weight on the hub bearing, first support it with SST 09608-16042 (09608-02021, 09608-02041). After disconnecting the drive shaft from the axle hub, work carefully so as not to damage the ABS speed sensor rotor serration on the drive shaft.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

  3. Drain the transaxle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Have an assistant depress the brake pedal and loosen the bearing locknut.



    Front wheels
     
    Cotter pin and locknut cap
     



    Engine undercover
     
    Fender apron seal
     
    ABS speed sensor
     
    Tie rod end, from the steering knuckle
     
    Steering knuckle, from the lower control arm
     
    Halfshaft from the axle hub, using a plastic hammer
     
    Cover the outer boot with a rag
     
    Halfshaft from the transaxle, using the proper tools

To install:

  1. Before installing the drive shaft, set the snap ring with its opening side facing downward.
  2.  
  3. Check whether inboard joint shaft is in contact with pinion shaft or not can be known from the sound or feeling. After installation, check that there is 2-3 mm (0.08-0.12 in.) of play in the axial direction.
  4.  
  5. Reverse the removal procedures to complete installation, tightening fasteners to: halfshaft nut, 217 ft. lbs. (294 Nm); tie rod end nut, 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Fill the transaxle with gear oil, install the fender apron, check front end alignment and test drive.
    NOTE
    If the cotter pin holes do not align, always correct by tightening the nut until the next hole aligns.

  9. Install a new cotter pin.

Rear Halfshaft



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Rear wheels
     
    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor from the axle assembly by removing the bolt, if equipped
     
    Cotter pin, lock cap and the nut holding the halfshaft to the axle carrier
     

  4.  
  5. Place matchmarks on the halfshaft and differential side gear shaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    4 nuts, washers and the halfshaft from the differential
     
    Halfshaft from the axle carrier

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Halfshaft into the axle carrier. Tighten the 4 nuts to 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm).
     
    Halfshaft. Tighten the locknut to 159 ft. lbs. (216 Nm).
     
    ABS sensor
     
    Rear wheels
     
    Negative battery cable
