  1. Using a slide hammer and adapter, remove the axle hub from the axle carrier.
  2.

  3. Remove the inner race (inside).
  4.

  5. Press, remove the inner race (outside) from the axle hub.
  6.

  7. Remove the 4 nuts and backing plate.
  8.  
  9. Using a slide hammer and adapter, remove the inner and outer oil seals.
  10.  
  11. Using snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring.
  12.  
  13. Place the inner race on the inside of the bearing.
  14.  
  15. Using a press, remove the bearing from the axle carrier.
  16.

To assemble:

  1. Using a press, install the bearing to the axle carrier.
    NOTE
    If the inner race and balls become loose and come out from the bearing outer race, make sure to install them on the same side as before.

  3. Using snap ring pliers, install a new snap ring.
  4.  
  5. Coat MP grease to the oil seal lip. Using SST and a hammer, install a new outer oil seal.
  6.

  7. Install the backing plate with the 4 nuts. Torque to 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Using a press, install the axle hub.
    NOTE
    Be careful not to damage the bearing.

  11. Coat MP grease to the oil seal lip. Using SST and a hammer, install a new inner oil seal.

Removal & Installation



2WD Models

Specific to:

Lexus RX300 1999-2003

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Flexible brake hose from the rear strut assembly
     
    Brake caliper and support it on using wire
     
    Brake rotor
     

  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor connector
     
    4 rear axle hub assembly nuts
     
    Hub assembly
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New hub assembly. Tighten the nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
     
    ABS speed sensor
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Brake caliper. Tighten the mounting bolts to 34 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
     
    Flexible brake hose to the rear strut assembly. Tighten the mounting bolt to 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
     
    Wheels

  3. Test drive the vehicle.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Flexible brake hose from the rear strut assembly
     
    Brake caliper and support it on using wire
     
    Brake rotor
     

  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor connector
     
    Cotter pin, locking cap and nut.
     
    Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the parking brake cable from the backing plate.
     
    Loosen, but do not remove, the 2 bolts on the lower end of the strut.
     
    Remove the strut rod rear bolt and nut. Disconnect the strut rod from the axle carrier.
     
    Remove the No. 1 lower suspension arm set bolt and nut from the axle carrier.
     
    Disconnect the No. 1 lower suspension arm from the axle carrier.
     
    Remove the No. 2 lower suspension arm set bolt and nut from the axle carrier.
     
    Disconnect the No.2 lower suspension arm from the axle carrier.
     
    Remove the 2 nuts and bolts on the lower side of the shock absorber.
     
    Remove the axle carrier with the axle hub.

To install:

Installation is ther reverse of removal. All fasteners should be tightened with the weight of the vehicle on the suspension. Observe the following torques:

  1. NO. 2 LOWER SUSPENSION ARM: 131 ft. lbs. (177 Nm)
  2.  
  3. NO. 1 LOWER SUSPENSION ARM: 131 ft. lbs. (177 Nm)
  4.  
  5. STRUT ROD: 91 ft. lbs. (123 Nm)
  6.  
  7. 2 BOLTS ON LOWER SIDE OF StrUT: 188 ft. lbs. (255 Nm)
  8.  
  9. PARKING BRAKE CABLE: 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm)
  10.  
  11. ABS SPEED SENSOR: 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
  12.  
  13. CALIPER: 34 ft. lbs. (47 Nm)
  14.  
  15. HUB NUT: 159 ft. lbs. (216 Nm)
  16.
